The present invention relates in general to the field of inflammation. In particular the present invention relates to the use of natural compounds for the preparation of a product to treat or prevent inflammation. For example an extract of wolfberry was shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. One embodiment of the present invention relates to the use of a primary composition comprising wolfberries or a part thereof for the preparation of a product to treat or prevent inflammation.

A method is provided for the prevention and treatment of patients having impaired gastro-intestinal tract function. The method comprises the steps of administering to a patient requiring same free amino acids including about 9.0% to about 17.0% glutamic acid.

Composition comprising free amino acids

A method of providing glutamine to a patient. A nutritional composition which includes whey protein, or a protein mixture which simulates the amino acid profile of whey protein, as a protein source is enterally administered to the patient. The whey protein may be a hydrolyzed whey protein. The patient may be a stressed patient, pre-term baby, or athlete.

The present invention relates to a method for preparing an enteral nutrition at the bed of a patient, which involves the use of a standard enteral solution to which is added, via a closed system, one or more compositions in module form, containing selected nutrients, adapted for a specific clinical condition. The present invention also pertains to the different modules, that are preferably in dry form and to the use thereof in the treatment and/or nourishment of a critically ill person.

A composition for an infant formula which includes casein protein and whey protein; a method of producing the composition; use of the composition in the manufacture of a medicament or nutritional product for addressing malnutrition; and a method of addressing malnutrition which includes administering an effective amount of the composition are provided. The composition includes protein, free arginine; tryptophan and histidine, a lipid source and a carbohydrate source. In addition, the whey protein is sweet whey protein from which caseino-glyco-macropeptide has been removed.

Protein hydrolyzates are used for prevention of bacterial overgrowth. In addition it was shown in sucklings mammals that specific protein hydrolyzates promote an intestinal flore pattern which is similar to the one of mammals raised by their mother. Other advantages are that the hydrolyzate is easier to obtain and simpler to administrate than treatment of bacterial overgrowth with the aid of active principles.

The present invention relates to food products comprising in percent by weight of dry matter, 0.5-5% of a viscous soluble fibre, 2-20% oat bran concentrate, and 7-35% cereal bran. The specific amount of these constituents provide for a high viscosity and are suitable to delay glucose absorption or appearance in blood and/or to maintain raised glucose levels while avoiding high glucose peaks. The high viscosity of a food product was shown to be a key factor in the appearance of glucose in the blood stream. Hence, the food products according to the present invention are also suitable for diabetic patients.

A nutritional composition is disclosed which comprises synergistic functional carbohydrates for preventing or treating infection by pathogenic bacteria and/or promoting gut flora balance and health. The carbohydrates have a synergistic activity on promoting bifidobacteria in the intestine. Also disclosed are a method of production of the composition; and a method of treatment of infection by pathogenic bacteria and/or promoting gut flora balance and health which comprises administering an effective amount of the composition.

Method of treating irritable bowel syndrome

Methods for maintaining, improving or increasing the synthesis of mucins by administering a nutritional composition or supplement that contains a therapeutically effective amount of threonine are provided. The present invention further provides methods for treating a variety of disease states characterized by alterations to the mucin levels, such as, intestinal inflammatory and bacterial infections or other like disease states.

Nutritional composition intended for specific gastro-intestinal maturation in premature mammals

A gelatinized cereal product which contains a plant material which is a source of inulin: for example chicory. Sufficient of the plant material is included to provide at least about 0.25% by weight of inulin on a dry basis. The cereal product may be used as a pet food or breakfast cereal.

The invention thus relates to a method for accelerating the rate of digestion of a protein matter, in which a protein matter is treated with transglutaminase, and it is mixed with anionic polysaccharides. The invention also relates to the use of the rapidly digested protein matter for preparing a food or pharmaceutical composition intended for oral administration to a mammal, to induce a postprandial peak of plasmatic increase in amino acids. This composition is intended for modulating the postprandial protein gain, limiting the problems linked to gastrointestinal motility disorders, limiting the postprandial sensations of nausea in pregnant women, and/or limiting the postprandial risks of regurgitation and/or gastro-esophageal reflux. Finally, a subject of the invention is also a food or pharmaceutical composition comprising anionic polysaccharides and a protein matter treated with transglutaminase.

Acceleration of the rate of digestion of a protein

A nutritional formula for PKU patients. The nutritional formula has, as a protein source, a mixture of caseino-glyco-macropeptide and complementary essential amino acids other than Phe to provide a balanced amino acid profile. Vitamins and minerals sufficient to meet daily requirements are also included. When used as a complete diet, the nutritional formula includes a carbohydrate source and a fat source. However the nutrutional formula may also be used as a protein supplement in which case the carbohydrate source and the fat source may be omitted. The nutritional formula has a pleasant taste.
