A machine which inflates and seals pillows in packaging is compact in overall size, can be conveniently operated to produce varied lengths of strips of inflated pillow-type packaging as needed, can begin production of inflated pillow-type strip packaging immediately after being held out of a production cycle for some period of time, and applies a heated sealing element directly to and in sliding contact with a web of film to securely seal the inlet port of an inflated pillow while the pillow is under pressure and as the web of film is continuously and uninterruptedly advanced through the machine.

An inflatable, conformable, cushioning, packaging product comprises a plurality of individual inflatable strips of multiple bubble cushioning structures. Each individual inflatable strip has a plurality of bubble chambers with each bubble chamber interconnected to an adjacent bubble chamber by an interconnecting passageway which is smaller in size and internal volume than the bubble chambers, but which is sufficiently large to enable air volume and pressure in one inflated bubble chamber to be transmitted to adjacent bubble chambers for distributing a shock load on one bubble chamber along the entire length of the individual inflatable strip of interconnected bubble chambers. Each individual inflatable strip is defined between two laterally extending spaced apart peripheral seal lines which have an undulating configuration free of corner shapes which could concentrate stresses.

Machine for inflating and sealing a preconfigured cushioning material which is wound in a roll on a hollow cylindrical core and has superposed layers of plastic film sealed together to form rows of interconnected, inflatable cells, a longitudinally extending channel near one edge of the material and inlet passageways interconnecting the channel and the rows of cells. The machine includes a rotatively mounted roll support shaft, a hub mounted on the shaft for engagement with the core at the end of the roll near the channel, a circumferentially expandable roll gripper for locking engagement with the inner wall of the cylindrical core, a feed mechanism for drawing the material and feeding it along a predetermined path, an inflator for injecting air into the cells, a nip roller, a pressing mechanism for pressing the nip roller against the roll of material, and a sealing mechanism for sealing the inlet passageways to retain the air in the cells.

Machine and method for making air-filled packing cushions from a roll of prefabricated film material having a longitudinally extending inflation channel near one edge of the material and chambers which communicate with the channel through laterally extending passageways. The roll rests on a pair of spaced apart, horizontally extending rollers. The film material is fed from the roll to an inflation tube which extends into the inflation channel, air is introduced into the chambers through the inflation tube to inflate the cushions, and a longitudinally extending seal is formed across the passageways between the channel and the chambers after the cushions are inflated.

Machine for inflating and sealing a preconfigured cushioning material which includes a rotatively mounted roll support shaft having a fixed end and a free end, a hub mounted on the shaft near the fixed end for engagement with a cylindrical core at the end of a roll of film material, a circumferentially expandable roll gripper at the free end of the shaft for locking engagement with the inner wall of the core, an inflator having a conically tapered tip and a plurality of outlet openings for injecting air into cells of the film material, a nip roller pressing against the roll of film material to limit the flow of air into the cells of the film material on the roll, and sealer for sealing the inlet passageways to retain the air in the cells.
