A pellet fuel burner includes a compact thermally insulated firebox for providing hot gases to a boiler, furnace or dryer. The apparatus includes a grate that includes a reciprocating arm for removing clinkers and ash from the grate. Pellet fuel feed is provided by a hopper that is isolated from the firebox by an airlock. A combustion air manifold is provided around the firebox to preheat primary and secondary combustion air.

A gas burning imitation log assembly (18) including an imitation log (20) carried by a supply conduit (24) is disclosed. Supply conduit (24) receives gas from a gas source (26). The gas contained in supply conduit (24) escapes through aligned slots (34) passing through supply conduit (24) and log (20). In one embodiment of the invention, supply conduit (24) includes an outer sleeve (48) and an inner sleeve (46) which define a gas region (32). In an alternative embodiment of the invention, supply conduit (24) is not used. Gas is conveyed into log (20) which contains a diffusing layer (52) that overlays slots (34) to uniformly diffuse the gas through log (20).

Stoves fueled by biomass pellets are provided with a grate assembly that supports the pellets for combustion and directs combustion gas into the fire. The grate assembly includes a passive grate of equally or unequally spaced rods. The design of the rods serves to prevent the ash and clinkers from accumulating on the grate in mounts that could reduce the flow of combustion gas into the fire. In one embodiment, an ignitor rod is provided as one of the spaced rods in the grate assembly. By applying power to the ignitor rod, the rod is raised to a sufficient temperature to ignite unburned biomass pellets in proximity to the ignitor rod.

The apparatus displaces the ash and clinkers from the grate which, if not removed, would adversely affect the heat output and efficiency of combustion. The apparatus uses a rotating reciprocating member that removes the ash and clinkers from the grate that supports the solid particulate fuel during combustion.

A stoker assembly for a solid particulate burning stove that includes a fuel directing flange for directing the fuel to an upper combustion plate and ventilation tubes to prevent the ignition and combustion of fuel stored in remote bins. The fuel directing flange serves to prevent the solid particulate fuel from falling back into the auger conveyor and being ground into smaller particulate matter.
