The disclosed technology provides systems and methods for filtering information based on a set of properties. The information consists of a set of items that the user is interacting with, such as documents, presentations, audio and video files, and the like. The properties can be specified by the user (by, for example, putting a set of items in lists and folders), based on actions taken by users in the system (such as commenting on, or liking, or viewing an item), or can represent a variety of other characteristics. Related properties can also be grouped together. Furthermore, the disclosed techniques provide mechanisms for automatically identifying useful properties and providing an indication of those useful properties to a user to use in narrowing results.

Narrowing information search results for presentation to a user

Systems and methods for identifying semantically and/or visually related information among a set of content items, such content items that include similar concepts or that have similar visual aspects, are disclosed. The disclosed techniques provide tools for identifying related information among various content items, such as text pages and documents, presentation slides and slide decks, etc. The disclosed techniques provide improved methods for searching among content items, organizing content items into categories, and pruning redundant content. Furthermore, the disclosed techniques provide improvements to computation of various metrics, including usage, performance, and impact metrics.

Systems and methods for identifying semantically and visually related content

Systems and methods for selecting items of interest for an organization from a set of feeds, based on the interests that users have demonstrated through their interactions with existing content, are described herein. In some embodiments, the system is part of a content management service that allows users to add and organize files, media, links, and other information. The content can be uploaded from a computer, imported from cloud file systems, added via links, or pulled from various kinds of feeds.

Techniques for organizing information, such as documents, presentations, web sites and web pages, audiovisual media streams, and the like are describe. This disclosed techniques include creating and using an interest graph to support the distribution of information to a user via a feed containing information items likely to be of interest to the user. An interest graph expresses the affinity between people and information&#x2014;the likelihood that a particular piece of information is of interest to a particular person. The interest graph is based on an understanding of relationships, monitoring of user behavior, and analysis of each piece of information. The interest graph represents many kinds of relationships, including: between users and other users, users and items, and users and collections. The interest graph can be computed using data both from a set of items and from user behavior.

Techniques for identifying and viewing information items within an organization comprising a plurality of users each having one or more roles within the organization is disclosed. The disclosed techniques provide systems and methods for implementing and using a 'skim preview' technique for previewing information items. This technique can be applied to a wide variety of information, such as presentations, documents, video, images, and so on and can be used for a variety of applications, including browsing, searching, discovery, and so on. The system can compute sequences that represent interesting visual aspects of the item being viewed. This can be applied to items that do not have a natural set of preview images, or it might be used as an alternative to the natural previews. The preview images may be sequenced chronologically, by importance, or based on any other metric.

Skim preview

A method, which identifies information of interest within an organization, determines use data that characterizes relationships among information items within the organization, where the information items include user data and collections of information items. The method generates interest data indicating affinities among the information items based on the determined use data. After receiving a query for data regarding the information items, the method responds to the query by providing one or more results based on the generated interest data. More details are provided herein.

Abstracting communication with a plurality of containers. Each container encapsulates or hosts a module (e.g., a web service, a database, etc.) associated with a distributed application. A meta-container communicates with drivers that interface with each of the containers. The meta-container represents an abstraction and a virtualization of the containers in the hierarchy. Each container may also be a meta-container for other containers. The recursion and layered hierarchy provide flexible, extensible, and efficient management of the distributed application.

Profile controls for profiling a distributed application are included in messages that are also used by the distributed application to transport data. A profile initiator causes profile controls to be inserted in the header portion of a message that is being transported across a distributed system. The profile initiator may insert profile controls directly or may cause a message router that receives the message to merge profile controls into the message. The message router may receive profile controls from the profile initiator or from computer-readable media that are maintained at the message router. The message, which now includes distributed application data and profile controls, is routed to a message recipient. The message recipient accesses the message to identify profile actions that are to be performed at the message recipient. The message recipient performs at least one of the identified profile actions.

Debug controls for debugging a distributed application are included in messages that are also used by the distributed application to transport data. A debug initiator causes debug controls to be inserted in the header portion of a message that is being transported across a distributed system. The debug initiator may insert debug controls directly or may cause a message router that receives the message to merge debug controls into the message. The message router may receive debug controls from the debug initiator or from configuration files that are maintained at the message router. The message, which now includes distributed application data and debug controls, is routed to a message recipient. The message recipient accesses the message to identify debug functions that are to be performed at the message recipient. The message recipient performs at least one of the identified debug functions.

Debugging distributed applications

A method and apparatus for analyzing the performance of a data processing system, particularly a distributed data processing system, provide a system user with tools for analyzing an application running thereon. Information about the flow and performance of the application can be specified, captured, and analyzed, without modifying it or degrading its performance or data security characteristics, even if it is distributed across multiple machines. The user interface permits the system user to filter the performance information, to set triggers which the performance analyzer is able to reduce and/or combine, to observe multiple time-synchronized displays of performance data either in real time or post mortem, and to play and re-play the operation of an automatically generated application model. The invention is implemented in part by providing suitable Application Program Interfaces (APIs) in the operating system of the data processing system.
