There is disclosed a spray tip useful for high pressure, airless spraying which has an orifice tip holder that is reversible between spraying and cleaning positions and that is interchangeable with other holders supporting orifice tips of varied diameters and capacities. The invention particularly provides a turret member as the orifice tip holder which has a size that permits it to be used as an ejector pin or member for removal of the seal from the spray tip. The turret member is sealed in the assembly by a floating seal in which the liquid line pressure provides the force to maintain the seal against the cylindrical member. The forward end of the floating seal has a seal face formed of a very hard, preferably reinforced plastic.

There is disclosed a spray tip for airless spraying in which a turret member, which carries the tungsten carbide spray tip, is rotatably mounted in a spray tip housing and is removably and interchangeably received in the housing. The turret member is provided with a dynamic seal which has a seal formed of a very hard plastic, preferably an acetal copolymer that is filled with a reinforcement material, preferably with glass fibers. The hard reinforced plastic resists cold flow and extrusion while, nevertheless, providing a resilient seal that is very effective, even when spraying very low viscosity liquids. Longevity of this seal and ease of rotation of the turret member while maintaining full sealing pressure on the seal is achieved by the cooperative use of a resiliently biased piston support for the seal. The seal is secured to the piston to form a seal subassembly and this subassembly is resiliently biased against the cylindrical face of the turret member by a compression spring captured between the upstream end of the piston and the end face of the spray gun barrel onto which the spray tip is secured.

There is disclosed an orifice tip which has a cylindrical base with an asymmetric head, preferably in the shape of a single upstanding elongated rib which is centrally located on the cylindrical base. The rib has tapered side walls with an arcuate, convex edge that has a transverse V-groove. The V-groove intersects a central passageway through the orifice tip, thereby providing a spray eyelet which is precisely oriented to the V-groove. The orifice tip is mounted in a holder having a transverse bore that terminates in an asymmetric receptacle in the form of an elongated slot which receives the elongated rib of the orifice tip, thereby precisely orienting the orifice tip in the holder. The orifice tip is particularly advantageous as it can be assembled to its holder with automated equipment.

Self-aligning spray tip

There is disclosed an improved spray tip for airless spraying of liquids in which the spray orifice is mounted in a rotatable turret member which is captured in a subassembly of a plastic spray guard and a tubular metal housing. The housing has a longitudinal through passageway which receives a floating piston seal member that has a forward, cylindrically concave face which is urged into a tight seal against the rotatable turret member by the liquid pressure which acts on the upstream face of the floating piston seal member. The floating piston seal member is sealed in the longitudinal through passageway by an annular seal which also restrains the turret member against rotation when the liquid pressure is released, thereby freely permitting substitution of spray orifices by interchanging of turret members. The turret member includes a handle with a dependent prong which is received through a slotted aperture of the spray guard into an internal cavity of the spray guard body having one side wall with shoulders which provide abutment stops for the turret member, thereby aligning its transverse bore with the longitudinal passageway through the housing.

Spray tip

There is disclosed an improved spray tip particularly suited for airless pressured spraying utilizing a spray orifice member in a removable turret member that can be rotated to reverse the orifice for cleaning. The design permits rapid exchange of the turret member, permitting quick substitution of different sized orifice members. The turret member is sealed in the assembly with a thin plastic seal and a seal support which is compressed in the assembly by hand tightening. The seal and seal support are restrained in the spray tip against dislodgement during removal of the turret member. A tee seal is provided which has a flange of reduced diameter which seats against the end of the spray gun to insure complete sealing with hand tightening of the retainer nut. The spray tip also includes a low friction bearing washer between its housing and retaining nut which, in cooperation with the tee seal, permits rotation of the spray tip without loosening its retainer nut.

There is disclosed an improved spray tip particularly suited for airless pressured spraying utilizing a spray orifice member in a removeable turret member that can be rotated to reverse the orifice for cleaning. The design overcomes difficulties with prior art spray tips of this construction by the use of a thin resilient seal which is located between the turret member and a seal support which is compressed in the assembly. The use of the thin seal achieves a fluid tight seal that prevents leaking even of low viscosity liquids while avoiding the seizure problems which have characterized plastic seals of prior devices. The turret member is removeable without disassembly of the spray tip or its guard, thereby permitting facile interchanging of turret members with differently sized orifices.

The invention is an adjustable spray nozzle useful in airless liquid spraying. The spray nozzle uses interchangeable spray orifice members which discharge against the beveled end of a cylindrical splash pin. The orifice member lines the cylindrical bore which receives the splash pin and the latter is axially adjustable in the spray nozzle body to permit an adjustably variable opening of the orifice, thereby permitting infinite adjustment of the volume of liquid and the area of the fan spray produced by the spray nozzle. The interchangeability of the orifice members provides a wide range of adjustability since interchangeable orifice members of varied orifice diameters can be readily substituted in the spray nozzle.

Adjustable spray nozzle

There is disclosed a spray nozzle head for spraying of pressured liquid such as airless spraying and the like which is constructed with a minimal number of parts and which provides for facile reversal of the spray orifice in the head, thereby permitting the orifice to be cleaned by the liquid pressure. The spray nozzle comprises a body with a longitudinal through passageway and a cylindrical through bore orthogonal to and intersecting the through passageway. A cylindrical turret member which carries a removable orifice spray tip is seated in the through bore and is restrained therein by a detent which permits rotation of the turret member through at least 180.degree. for reversing the direction of the orifice spray tip. The turret member is sealed by a single seal washer that is biased against the turret member by an adaptor threaded into an internally threaded counterbore in the longitudinal through passageway of the body. The body is turned to advance the adaptor against the seal washer biasing the latter against the turret member, sealing the latter and permitting discharge of the liquid through the orifice tip. When the orifice tip becomes clogged, the turret member is released for rotation by twisting the body on the adaptor, releasing the tension on the seal washer and permitting the turret member to be rotated 180.degree. by finger pressure. In another embodiment, the necessity for twisting of the body on the adaptor is eliminated by providing a hand lever on the turret member whereby the turret member can be rotated against the biasing force of the adaptor.

Spray nozzle head

There is disclosed a reverisble spray tip assembly useful for airless sprayers and the like which has the spray tip member mounted in a barrel housing with distal portions of equal lengths and diameters and medial rim means of greater diameter. The assembly is secured to the discharge of a spray gun and the like with a retainer but that holds the assembly in a spraying position with the spray tip member directed to discharge a spray pattern from the gun and in a reversed position with the spray tip member seated against the barrel of the spray gun to permit discharge of the liquid in a reverse direction through the spray tip member, thereby cleaning the member. The assembly is provided with at least one flat chordal surface on the forward distal portion which is indexed to the orifice of the spray tip member to permit alignment of the spray tip member after securing the retaining nut and assembly to the barrel of the spray gun. In a preferred embodiment, the retaining nut and spray tip assembly are combined with a spray guard which has a cylindrical portion for receiving the retaining nut with an aperture bearing a flat chordal surface for securing the flat spray pattern tip assembly against rotation with respect to the guard, permitting adjustment of spray pattern to desired orientation by rotating the guard and an antifriction bearing is provided to facilitate the rotational adjustment.
