A head assembly for a pulverized coal nozzle includes removeable wear-resistant inserts having vanes. The vanes may be flat or curved to direct a stream of air and pulverized solid fuel particles from the inlet port toward the outlet port. The curved vanes curve in two dimensions to evenly distribute the stream of air and pulverized solid fuel away from the outer surfaces reducing wear and corrosion. The pipe elbow has a removable cover that allows for easy access. The vanes are attached to a wear-resistant replaceable liner thus allowing them to be easily removed and replaced. The wear-resistant liner may be made from several parts for ease of removal and replacement.

The coal rope-breaking vaneis pivotable about an axis to adjust an angle of the vanes relative to a stream of air and pulverized solid fuel particles from the inlet port. An adjustment barmay connect to the vanesand extend outward through the pipe elbow to allow the vanesto be adjusted while the pulverized solid fuel particles flow through the head assembly. The pipe elbow may further include inspection portsand a removable cover. The vanes may be attached to the removable coverthus allowing them to be easily removed and replaced.

A simple, economical and reliable swirl register [] is described for use with a wall burner of a commercial boiler. It employs a number of spaced swirl blocks [] that connect side plates []. A number of moveable vanes [] are provided in the air ducts [] created between the swirl blocks []. The vanes [] are attached to vane rods [] that operate the vanes []. The swirl blocks [] are lightweight and rigid structures for holding the side plate [] a fixed distance from side plate []. The block construction reduces binding of the vanes [] as the swirl register [] receives differential heating. The vane rods [] extend through a windbox front plate [] outside of the windbox area. A linkage assembly [] rotates the vane rods []. A motor and gearbox [] cause all vanes [] to rotate the same amount.

A pulverized solid fuel nozzle assemblyincludes a fuel feed pipeand a nozzle tippivotally secured relative to the fuel feed pipe. The nozzle tipincludes an inner shellhaving a round inlet endarranged in concentric relationship with the round outlet endof the generally cylindrical shell. Pulverized solid fuel nozzle assembly

A coil spring assembly for connection with a separator body to apply a spring force to a grinding roll of a journal assembly to pulverize solid fuel. The coil spring assembly includes: a preload stud having a first end in communication with the journal assembly and an exposed opposite second end extending from the coil spring assembly; a spring adjustment bolt and bearing assembly being fixed relative to the preload stud extending therethrough; and a seal being substantially cylindrical shaped and flexible at least along a central axis thereof. The seal has a first end operably secured to the spring adjustment bolt and bearing assembly and an opposite second end operably secured to the second end of the preload stud thereby sealing a bushing area corresponding to a portion of the preload stud surrounded by the spring adjustment bolt and bearing assembly from ground solid fuel dust and allowing movement of the preload stud at least along the central axis thereof to apply the spring force from the coil spring assembly to the grinding roll.

A wear plate assembly includes a body portion and an abutment flange extending from a radially outer circumferential edge of the body portion and substantially normal thereto. The abutment flange is cooperatively configured with respect to another abutment flange of a respective adjacent wear plate that interengages with the wear plate such that a convoluted edge of the another abutment flange of the respective adjacent wear plate intermeshes with a respective convoluted edge of the abutment flange of the wear plate. At least one polygonal recess and a corresponding abutment ramp are substantially aligned therewith at a same latitude on the body portion, the recess further includes a through hole extending through the wear plate. A first clip configured is partially received in the polygonal recess, the clip having a plurality of exposed impact surface faces.

A flow control apparatus for a coal pipe containing a stream of primary combustion air carrying pulverized solid fuel particles, includes a frame sealingly secured to an outside surface of the coal pipe around a window opening formed on one side of the pipe. An orifice plate having an orifice opening at the center is supported for pivotal movement in the coal pipe on a spindle extending radially outwardly from an edge portion on one side of the orifice plate and out through the window opening in the pipe. A bearing sleeve is provided for supporting the spindle for rotating movement about a spindle axis extending transversely of the coal pipe across the center thereof. A mounting plate structure for the sleeve is provided and is attached to the frame. A removable handle is attached on an outer end of the spindle for rotating the orifice plate in the coal pipe to vary the effective flow cross-section of the orifice opening for controlling the flow of coal and primary air to a burner.

Variable orifice plate for coal pipes

A new and improved method and apparatus for altering the firing pattern of an existing furnace of the type including at least one pair of vertically spaced apart burners mounted on a wall of the furnace and supplied with secondary air from a common windbox. The method involves cutting a rectangular panel from the furnace wall around a first burner wherein the burner is located asymmetrically toward a first panel end and spaced farther away from a vertically opposite second end of the panel. The cut-out panel is then reversed in orientation from end to end so that the first burner is then spaced farther apart at a greater distance from a second burner. The panel is reinstalled in the furnace wall in reverse orientation thereby providing a greater spacing or staging distance between the first and second burners producing a reduced level of NO.sub.x when the burners are fired. The increased spacing distance between the burners, the inclusion of new interstage air ports on the panels, and the addition of new burners with unique secondary air swirl orientation results in greatly improved lower NO.sub.X levels in a retrofit of an existing furnace.

Method and apparatus for altering the firing pattern of an existing

A flame retaining nozzle tip for a burner for a pulverized fuel fired furnace receiving a primary stream of pulverized fuel and primary transport and combustion air for discharge into the combustion zone of the furnace comprises a hollow, open-ended, choke or body having an inlet end of generally polygonal flow cross-section for receiving the stream and an outlet end of generally rounded cross-section for accelerating and discharging the stream into the furnace. The outlet end of the choke has a flow cross-sectional area that is less than that of the inlet end to provide choking action. An elongated center element is mounted in coaxial alignment with a central axis of the choke body extending between the inlet and outlet ends. A plurality of swirl vanes are mounted around the central axis and are angularly disposed relative to the general flow direction with inner edges of the vanes spaced equilaterally around and connected to the central element and outer edges connected to the inside surfaces of the choke body. The vanes cause the stream of primary air and pulverized fuel to rotate rapidly around the central axis as the stream passes through the outlet end.
