A method for efficient utilization of a transport capacity provided by an optical transport network includes mapping client signals comprising lower order optical data units into optical data tributary units, each requiring a number of tributary slots of an aggregate payload area having a size corresponding to the available aggregated OPU payload areas of Nx independent higher order optical data units to be transported. The method further includes multiplexing the optical data tributary units into the aggregate payload area. The method further includes mapping the tributary slots of the aggregate payload area into tributary slots provided by the OPU payload areas of the Nx independent higher order Optical data units according to a predefined mapping rule. The method further includes multiplexing the Nx independent optical data units containing the payload areas or transmitting them as optical transport units.

The invention relates to a method for the transmission of a digital signal in inverse multiplexing, particularly via an Optical Transport Network (OTN), in which a digital signal to be transmitted, which is split into a certain number M of several sub-signals, where each sub-signal of a transmit side of a transmission line assigned exclusively to this sub-signal is transmitted to a reception side of the assigned transmission line, and in which, on the reception side of the transmission lines, the sub-signals are reassembled to a digital reception signal. According to the invention, on the reception side, bit errors in the digital reception signal including their position in the digital reception signal are detected, and from the detected position of the bit errors and from the assignment of the individual bytes of the digital reception signal to the respective sub-signals and transmission lines, which assignment is also known on the reception side, it is determined to which sub-signal the detected bit errors were assigned. From this one or more parameters are determined, which characterize the transmission quality of the transmission lines assigned to each sub-signal and/or allow inferences to be drawn regarding which error mechanisms of the transmission line in question impact its transmission quality. In addition, the invention relates to a reception device for a system for the transmission of a digital signal in inverse multiplexing, which carries out this method.

Provided are methods and devices for determining the assignment of subsignals (S, S, S, S) transmitted by inverse multiplexing, particularly via an Optical Transport Network (OTN), to the transmission links () carrying said subsignals. After a synchronization for the correct assembly of the subsignals (S, S, S, S) into the digital reception signal (E), the signal transmission via at least one transmission link () is interrupted for a detection process in which the subsignal assigned to the interrupted link is determined. The process may be repeated to determine all subsignal assignments.

An optical transceiver unit for an optical WDM transmitting and receiving device is taught, with a transmitting unit to which a data signal can be fed to a specified channel input port of a multiplexer unit, wherein a separate channel wavelength is allocated to each channel input port, and the transmitting unit can be tuned with respect to optical carrier wavelength across a specified range of wavelengths. The transmitting unit is constructed so that, within the specified range of wavelengths, discrete wavelengths can be set that correspond to the channel wavelengths. In tuning mode, the controller unit can drive the transmitting unit so that the possible channel wavelengths are scanned through. The controller unit evaluates the reception signal fed to it from the receiving unit for whether abort criteria for tuning mode have been fulfilled or not, wherein the scanning process is continued until the abort criteria are fulfilled.

Schemes are provided for starting up optical transmission links where, after a link interruption, endpoints switch into a startup mode original detection state, and a query-transmit pulse goes out at both end points at given time intervals. In a 'TRANSMITTED' handshake mode, in a loop to be passed through n times, and at least once, after the transmission of a transmit pulse, it is detected whether a received pulse is received within a given time span. If no received pulse is received, then the mode is ended and the system is returned to the original detection state. If a received pulse is received, it is answered with another transmit pulse. After the last transmit pulse, if another received pulse occurs within a given time span, the link is activated. If not, the 'TRANSMITTED' handshake mode ends and the system enters the original detection state.
