An improved air purification adsorbent is disclosed. The air purification adsorbent comprises titanium dioxide (TiO) impregnated with zinc chloride (ZnCl2). The adsorbent may be used in air purification systems for removing ammonia from air streams. The nanocrystalline (amorphous) structure of the adsorbent results in a higher density of surface defects, higher surface area, and higher reactivity which, when combined with the synergistic effect of ZnCland the nanocrystalline TiO, provides a significantly longer breakthrough time of ammonia as compared with breakthrough time from unimpregnated nanocrystalline TiO, the commercial (crystalline) TiOimpregnated with ZnCl, pure ZnCL, and other commercially available adsorbents of ammonia. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Adsorbent for removal of ammonia from air streams

To achieve the removal of a broad spectrum of chemical hazards, multiple layers of impregnated activated carbon and nanocrystalline materials are incorporated into the adsorbent bed. For optimum performance using the least amount of material, a two-layer configuration is used. The top layer consists of a homogeneous mixture of an MgO/CaO based nanocrystalline material (e.g., Mg/Ca) and Kureha or other petroleum pitch-based bead shaped activated carbon impregnated treated with phosphoric acid. The bottom layer is comprised of a single layer of Calgon URC carbon. The volume ratios of the components are 9:5:11 Mg/Ca, phosphoric acid treated Kureha carbon, and URC, respectively. The new configuration leads to a 30% reduction in size of the existing NIOSH CBRN CAP 1 cartridge. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

Multilayered mixed bed filter for the removal of toxic gases from air streams and methods thereof

Apparatus and methods for reducing or eliminating undesirable air-borne substances, such as odors, bacteria, viruses, fungi, and toxins, are provided. A filter containing nanocrystalline metal oxide or metal hydroxide particles may be installed within an air handling apparatus such as an existing HVAC unit located within a building, and particularly within a home, or a portable air processor or purifier. The air handling apparatus comprises a blower which pulls air containing various undesirable substances from within the enclosed environment and directs it through a filtering device containing the nanocrystalline particles. The undesirable substances are sorbed by the nanocrystalline particles thereby creating a deodorized stream of air that may then be directed back into various portions of the enclosed environment or vented to the atmosphere.

Method and apparatus for control and elimination of undesirable substances

The invention provides a sorptive sheet material in which finely divided nanocrystalline particles that react with a variety of chemical and/or biological agents are dispersed. The sheet material comprises a fibrous web that is formed of a plurality of fibers that are bonded to each other. The fibrous web contains a relatively high concentration of reactive nanocrystalline particles that are entrapped within the matrix of the fibrous web. Fluids containing toxic agents, such as chemical and/or biological agents, odors and/or odor causing compounds, and toxic industrial compounds, pass into the web and contact the reactive nanocrystalline particles contained therein. The reactive nanocrystalline particles react with, and chemically alter or inactivate the toxic agents. The sorptive sheet material may be used to construct containers, such as remains pouches, for the storing and transporting of contaminated items, particularly human remains.

Decontaminating sheet material containing reactive nanocrystalline particles and products constructed therefrom

Methods of removing odors, particularly odors within enclosed environments are provided which employ nanocrystalline metal oxide and metal hydroxide particles. The nanocrystalline particles are dispersed within an enclosed space so as to contact exposed surfaces located within the space such as walls, floors, upholstery, and the like and adsorb odor-causing materials located within the enclosed space.

Compositions and methods for destroying biological agents such as toxins and bacteria are provided wherein the substance to be destroyed is contacted with finely divided metal oxide or hydroxide nanocrystals. In various embodiments, the metal oxide or metal hydroxide nanocrystals have reactive atoms stabilized on their surfaces, species adsorbed on their surfaces, or are coated with a second metal oxide. The desired metal oxide or metal hydroxide nanocrystals can be pressed into pellets for use when a powder is not feasible. Preferred metal oxides for the methods include MgO, SrO, BaO, CaO, TiO, ZrO, FeO, VO, VO, MnO, FeO, NiO, CuO, AlO, SiO, ZnO, AgO, [Ce(NO)&#x2014;Cu(NO)]TiO, Mg(OH), Ca(OH), Al(OH), Sr(OH), Ba(OH), Fe(OH), Cu(OH), Ni(OH), Co(OH), Zn(OH), AgOH, and mixtures thereof.

Reactive nanoparticles as destructive adsorbents for biological and chemical contamination

Methods of reducing smoke levels in smoke-affected areas, reducing the level of toxic compounds produced by fires, fire suppression, and increasing flame retardancy. In particular, methods according to the present invention comprise dispersing nanocrystalline particles in the areas affected by smoke for sorption of smoke particulates and toxic compounds produced from a fire. The nanocrystalline particles are also effective for use in methods of fire suppression and flame retardancy.

Method for biological and chemical contamination

Pelletized adsorbent compositions and methods of adsorbing toxic target compounds are provided for the destructive adsorption or chemisorption of toxic or undesired compounds. The pelletized adsorbents are formed by pressing together powder nanocrystalline particles comprising a metal hydroxide or a metal oxide at pressures of from about 50 psi to about 6000 psi to form discrete self-sustaining bodies. The pelletized bodies should retain at least about 25% of the surface area/unit mass and total pore volume of the starting metal particles.

Porous pellet adsorbents fabricated from nanocrystals

Compositions and methods for destroying chemical and biological agents such as toxins and bacteria are provided wherein the substance to be destroyed is contacted with finely divided metal oxide nanoparticles. The metal oxide nanoparticles are coated with a material selected from the group consisting of surfactants, waxes, oils, silyls, synthetic and natural polymers, resins, and mixtures thereof. The coatings are selected for their tendency to exclude water while not excluding the target compound or adsorbates. Preferred metal oxides for the methods include MgO, SrO, BaO, CaO, TiO, ZrO, FeO, VO, VO, MnO, FeO, NiO, CuO, AlO, SiO, ZnO, AgO, the corresponding hydroxides of the foregoing, and mixtures thereof.

Air-stable metal oxide nanoparticles

Composites for destroying chemical and biological agents such as toxins and bacteria, and methods of preparing and using those composites are provided. According to the invention, the substance to be destroyed is contacted with the inventive composites which comprise finely divided metal oxide nanoparticles at least partially coated with carbon. Advantageously, the composites exclude water while not excluding the target compound or adsorbates. The desired metal oxide nanoparticles can be pressed into pellets for use when a powder is not feasible. Preferred metal oxide nanoparticles include MgO, SrO, BaO, CaO, TiO, ZrO, FeO, VO, VO, MnO, FeO, NiO, CuO, AlO, SiO, ZnO, AgO, and mixtures thereof.

Carbon-coated metal oxide nanoparticles

Improved area decontamination products and methods of use thereof are provided which include reactive nanoparticles (e.g., metal oxides, hydroxides and mixtures thereof) with one or more biocides and a liquid carrier for the nanoparticles and biocide(s). The products may be formulated for area decontamination as sprays, fogs, aerosols, pastes, gels, wipes or foams, and the presence of reactive nanoparticles enhances the neutralization of undesirable chemical or biological compounds or agents. The nanoparticles may be from the group consisting of the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, transition metal, actinide and lanthanide oxides and hydroxides and mixtures thereof. In preferred forms, nanocrystalline oxides and hydroxides of Al, Ca, Ce, Mg, Sr, Sn, Ti and Zn are employed having single crystallite sizes of up to about 20 nm and surface areas of at least about 15 m /g.
