The clean-up of crude oil is accomplished using an oil solubilizing agent from a class of onium halides to solubilize the oil in water. The oil solubilizing agent includes a quaternary phosphonium halide, a quaternary ammonium halide, or a ternary sulfonium halide. The onium halide also includes a hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain having from 10 to 24 carbon atoms, and can include both aromatic and aliphatic components.

The present invention provides a method and compositions useful for inhibiting corrosion of a corrodible metal resulting from contact of water and air with the metal. In this method, a stannous salt and a hydrocarbyl substituted succinimide of a polyethylene polyamine are added to the water in minor amounts and cooperatively reduce corrosion of the metal to a substantially zero rate. While the amount of each agent for an effective inhibition is minor, say in the range of from about 0.1 to 100 ppm, a relatively concentrated solution is required for addition to the water. Suitable solvent media include the lower alkanols and mixture thereof with or without added water. Isopropanol is preferred. The solvent component of the compositions also varies depending upon the particular imide and/or salt component employed and the concentration desired. In general, the lower alkanol portion of the medium is in the range of from about 15 to 100 volume percent and the water portion is in the range of from about 0 to 85 volume percent. A medium in the range of from about 50 to 67 volume percent water is preferred. The relative amounts of the imide and stannous salt components desirably used varies depending upon the nature of the water in which the agents are employed. Satisfactory relative amounts by weight for each to the other at set forth above, are in the range of from about 0.5 to 10, preferably 0.8 to 2 and more preferably about 1 to 1 weight ratio.

The present invention relates to a method for chemically treating structures fabricated from titanium based alloy compositions which compositions inherently possess positive open circuit corrosion potentials and reduced rates of corrosion properties. The method comprises contacting said fabricated structures with an aqueous pickling solution of hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids at a temperature of at least ambient temperature. This contact is continued for a time sufficient to remove any deleterious oxide layers adhered to the surfaces of the alloy compositions of the fabricated structures.

Method of treating a titanium structure

An improved process is provided for the removal and recovery of acidic gases contained in mixed gas streams. The improvements comprise cooling a process regenerated aqueous alkanolamine solution containing an alkanolamine concentration ranging up to about 20 percent by weight to a temperature ranging up to about 35.degree. C. and introducing said cooled regenerated solution into an absorption zone to contact a mixed gas stream containing acidic gases and wherein the regenerated aqueous alkanolamine solution remains essentially at the temperature to which it is cooled throughout a substantial portion of the absorption zone.

Process for recovering acidic gases

A method for substantially removing both alkaline earth metal cations and dissolved acidic gases from a water source contaminated therewith to produce a substantially nonscaling and noncorroding water supply therefrom. The method includes contacting the contaminated water source with an ion exchange resin to substantially remove the metal cation contaminants contained therein and produce a demineralized intermediate effluent having a pH of less than about 3.5. The demineralized intermediate effluent then is stripped of the acidic gas contaminants dissolved therein and the pH of the stripped effluent adjusted to a value in the range of from about 9.0 to about 10.0.

The present invention relates to titanium base alloy compositions having substantially improved resistance to corrosion in mineral acid environments and to structures fabricated therefrom. More particularly, the present invention relates to titanium base alloy compositions containing iron and copper in certain specified amounts, the remainder being substantially all titanium apart from incidental impurities therein and to anode structures fabricated therefrom for use in the electrolytic manufacture of battery grade manganese dioxide.

An improved system for monitoring cathodic protection systems for marine installations wherein a reference electrode is utilized to measure and periodically monitor the cathodic reference potentials. The reference electrode is connected to one end of a cable and the opposite end portion of the cable is operatively connected to a reel. The reel is connected electrically to the marine installation through a voltmeter and the voltmeter provides readouts of the measured cathodic reference potentials. The present invention includes an improved reel which includes a contactor assembly adapted to maintain electrical continuity between the reel and the voltmeter as the cable is being wound onto and unwound from portions of the reel. The improved reel also includes a handle assembly having a storage position and an operating position wherein the handle assembly is adapted to cooperate in rotating portions of the reel to wind the cable onto and unwind the cable from portions of the reel and wherein the handle assembly is operable to lock the reel to prevent rotation of portions of the reel in the storage position of the handle assembly. The reel also includes a guide for guiding the cable as the cable is wound onto and unwound from portions of the reel.

System for monitoring cathodic protection system of marine installations

A method for the preparation of electrolytic manganese dioxide is provided employing improved cathodes, said cathodes being characterized by their reduced tendency to corrode and undergo buildup of current inhibiting scale under electrolytic conditions. The improved cathodes are fabricated from copper comprised of at least about 99.95 weight percent of copper, from about 0.001 to about 0.085 weight percent of silver and up to about 0.003 weight percent of phosphorous. The weight ratio of phosphorous to silver in said copper cathode will be no greater than about 2.0 to 1.0.

Method of preparing electrolytic manganese dioxide

This invention relates to a method for preparing an improved electrode comprised of titanium and platinum joined to one another in such manner as to resist separation by corrosion when utilized in a cathodic protection system in a corrosive environment such as in a shell and tube heat exchanger.

More particularly, a process for oxidizing a metal of variable valence, such as, for example, uranium or vanadium contained in wet process phosphoric acid to a higher valence state for extraction by subsequent contact with complex organic extractants. Process for oxidizing a metal of variable valence by constant current

A process for beneficiating ilmenite ore using electrolytic reduction. The ilmenite ore is admixed with an acidic solution to form a mixture. The mixture is electrolytically reduced to convert at least a portion of any ferric iron that is present to ferrous iron. The acidic solution dissolves the ferrous iron in the ilmenite ore and yields beneficiated ilmenite having a relatively high titanium dioxide content.
