Disclosed are methods, systems, and devices for battery formation. A first set of pulses, having a first frequency, and that carry a net zero charge, are applied to a battery. After the first set of pulses are applied to the battery, a second set of pulses that carry a net positive charge are applied to the battery. The second set of pulses are either applied after expiry of a particular time period following the application of the first set of pulses, or based on some battery measurements. After the second set of pulses are applied to the battery, a battery parameter is measured, and based on the measured battery parameter, a third set of pulses, having a second frequency, and that also carry a net zero charge, are applied to the battery.

Methods and systems for battery formation

A pulse charging for a battery includes multi-stage voltage conversion. At first stage, an input voltage from a power supply is divided into a plurality of intermediate voltages. At second stage, one or more of the plurality of intermediate voltage are further down converted to generate one or more portions of a charging pulse to be applied to the battery. The down conversion of the input voltage to the output voltage is accompanied by increase in charging current that is applied to the battery. The higher charging current applied to the battery results in fast charging of the battery. Also, the described multi-stage voltage conversion circuitry has high efficiency which alleviates problem of heat dissipation associated with the voltage conversion for charging of the battery.

Methods, systems, and computer-readable media may charge a battery. A value of at least one battery parameter is determined, and a range of values to which the value of the at least one battery parameter corresponds to is identified. Based on the identified range of values, a set of values for at least one charging parameter is determined, and a battery is charged while a value of the at least one charging parameter is swept among the set of values.

A battery pack includes an arrangement of battery cells organized in battery groups connected in series, with each group having one or more battery units connected in parallel, and each battery unit comprising one or more series-connected battery cells connected to a battery switch. Charging of the battery pack uses pulse charging. The charging pulses provided to the battery units can be determined based on one or more measured characteristics of battery cells comprising the battery unit so that charging of the battery units can be optimized according to those characteristics. The charging pulses provided to each battery group are timed so that there is an uninterrupted flow of charging current through all the battery groups at all times.

System and method for battery pack

A battery charging circuit can produce a pulsed charging current to charge a battery. During charging, without disconnecting the pulsed charging current from the battery, EIS measurements can be made. In other words, the pulsed charging current can serve double-duty, for battery charging and as a drive signal for the EIS measurements. The EIS measurements can be used to alter parameters of the pulsed charging current to improve battery life. In some instances, the parameters of the pulsed charging current can be momentarily changed for the purpose of making the EIS measurements, and then restored subsequent to making the measurements to parameters suitable for battery charging.

A method for charging a battery cell includes first transferring of energy from a power source to a plurality of capacitive regions in the battery cell followed by transferring of charge stored in the plurality of capacitive regions of the battery cell into at least an electrolytic mixture that comprises the battery cell and electrodes immersed in the electrolyte mixture. The capacitive regions in the battery cell comprise capacitive double layers between the electrolyte mixture and particles of active material that comprise the battery cell. The transferring of energy from the power source to the capacitive regions occurs for a first duration of time sufficient to substantially fully charge the capacitive regions.

Disclosed is pulse charging of a battery that uses frequency modulation to vary the pulse periods of the charging pulses. Battery measurements can be made to determine the duty cycles of the charging pulses.

Disclosed is pulse charging and pulse discharging of a reconfigurable battery pack that uses frequency modulation to vary the pulse periods of the charging pulses and the discharging pulses. Battery measurements can be made to determine the duty cycles of the charging pulses and the discharging pulses. Additionally, the battery pack can be reconfigured to match with varying charging devices and varying loads.
