An optical fiber including a multimode core having a radius, R, and a maximum relative refractive index, &#x394;, at a wavelength &#x3bb;, an inner clad layer surrounding the core and having a radial thickness, T, and a minimum relative refractive index, &#x394;, of about 0.0% at a wavelength of &#x3bb;, an intermediate clad layer surrounding the inner clad layer and having a radial thickness, T, and a maximum relative refractive index &#x394;and an outer clad layer surrounding the inner clad layer and having a radial thickness, T, and a maximum relative refractive index, &#x394;, at a wavelength of &#x3bb;. The optical fiber satisfies the following relationship: &#x394;&#x3e;&#x394;&#x3e;&#x394;, and the optical fiber exhibits an overfilled bandwidth of greater than or equal to about 1.5 GHz-km at &#x3bb;.

Multimode fiber with intermediate clad layer

A method of making a multimode optical fiber is disclosed. In one embodiment the method includes calculating a core radius that maximizes the bandwidth of the multimode optical fiber wherein the effect of draw tension is accounted for. The embodiments herein illustrate how core radius can be tuned so the time delay of the outermost guided mode group is reduced. The resultant core radius may be targeted for a value off-nominal from what would be expected for a particular commercial optical fiber type.

Method of making a multimode optical fiber

An optical fiber including a multimode core having a radius, R, and a maximum relative refractive index, &#x3b1;, at a wavelength &#x3bb;, an inner clad region surrounding the core and having a radial thickness, T, and a minimum relative refractive index, &#x394;, of about 0.0% at a wavelength of &#x3bb;, and an outer clad layer, which is doped with chlorine at greater than or equal to 0.5 weight %, surrounding the inner clad region and having a radial thickness, T, and a maximum relative refractive index, &#x394;, at a wavelength of &#x3bb;. The optical fiber satisfies the following relationship: &#x394;&#x3e;&#x394;&#x3e;&#x394;, and the optical fiber exhibits an overfilled bandwidth of greater than or equal to about 1.5 GHz-km at &#x3bb;.
