Various approaches for computationally characterizing tissue in an anatomic target region include generating multiple sonications to transient acoustic reflectors at or proximate to the target region; measuring reflection signals of the sonications off the transient acoustic reflectors; based on the measurements, identifying the reflection signals originating from single transient acoustic reflectors; and based at least in part on the identified reflection signals, generating a digital map including a tissue characteristic.

Various approaches for detecting microbubble cavitation resulting from ultrasound waves transmitted from an ultrasound transducer include associating at least one time-domain reference signal with microbubble cavitation; causing the transducer to transmit one or more ultrasound pulse; acquiring, in the time domain, an echo signal from microbubbles in response to the transmitted ultrasound pulse(s); correlating at least a portion of the echo signal to at least a corresponding portion of the time-domain reference signal based on similarity therebetween; and detecting the microbubble cavitation based on the corresponding portion of the reference signal.

Ultrasound transducer with non-uniform elements

Method for adjusting the output of a phased array ultrasonic transducer using surface mapping. The transducer surface is mapped using a sensor, such as a hydrophone, to determine the actual location of each transducer element relative to the expected location of each transducer element. Mapping can be performed by measuring a distance between a hydrophone and each transducer element. At least one of the hydrophone and the transducer are moveable relative to each other to map the transducer surface. A determination is made whether the actual location of a transducer element differs from the expected location. Drive signals of certain transducer elements having actual locations that differ from expected locations are adjusted to control the output of the transducer.
