Headphone audio controllers are disclosed. In one implementation, a headphone includes: an acoustic transducer that is configured to develop sound for delivery to an ear of a user; a microphone that is configured to sense sound from the acoustic transducer and develop an output; and a processor, responsive to the microphone output, and that is configured to: determine first and second audio transfer functions between the acoustic transducer and the microphone, and calculate an audio controller based on both the first audio transfer function and the second audio transfer function.

Headphone audio controller

A headphone includes an earphone that includes an earcup, an ear cushion, and a driver plate assembly. The driver plate assembly is supported in the earcup and includes a driver plate, a driver mounted along a rear surface of the driver plate, an opening that is provided in the driver plate to allow acoustic energy to pass from the driver into a user's ear canal, a ring that is arranged substantially coaxially with the opening, and an acoustic mesh. The ring defines a planar surface on which the acoustic mesh is mounted.

Various aspects include a wearable audio device having active noise reduction (ANR). In some cases, a method for processing audio signals includes receiving a noise reduction signal configured to modify an audio signal and generate a noise reduced audio signal, the noise reduction signal having a nominal loop gain; and generating an adjusted noise reduction signal in response to a detected adverse low frequency event, the adjusted noise reduction signal having a modulated loop gain configured to reduce artifacts in the noise reduced audio signal.

Wearable active noise reduction (ANR) device having low frequency feedback loop modulation

An active noise reduction earbud includes a housing and a first feedforward microphone disposed in the housing. A first sound inlet opening extends through the housing and is configured to conduct external sound to the first feedforward microphone. The first sound inlet opening is configured to sit within a concha cavum of a user's ear and faces toward an auricle of the user's ear when the earbud is worn.

Active noise reduction earbud

A method of determining an audio controller for a headphone that is configured to use an acoustic transducer to develop sound that is delivered to an ear of a user and that includes a feedback microphone that is configured to sense sound developed by the acoustic transducer, and a related computer program product and system. A first audio transfer function between the acoustic transducer and the feedback microphone is measured. A second audio transfer function between the acoustic transducer and the feedback microphone with a feedback controller applied is determined. The audio controller is calculated based on both the first audio transfer function and the second audio transfer function.

Various aspects include a wearable audio device having active noise reduction (ANR). In some cases, an ANR system for a wearable audio device includes: a fixed filter that receives a signal from a feedback microphone and outputs a noise reduction signal, where the fixed filter is configured to provide ANR with a nominal loop gain; and a tunable filter that outputs an adjusted noise reduction signal by modulating the nominal loop gain in response to low frequency noise being detected in the noise reduction signal, where modulating the nominal loop gain includes reducing low frequency ANR performance.

Various aspects include a wearable audio device having active noise reduction (ANR), where the ANR device includes: a feedback microphone; an electroacoustic transducer; and a feedback compensator configured to output a noise reduction signal to the electroacoustic transducer in response to a feedback signal from the feedback microphone, wherein the feedback compensator includes a tunable filter that modulates a loop gain in response to an adverse low frequency event being detected in the noise reduction signal outputted from the tunable filter, wherein the tunable filter is configured to maintain a substantially similar loop gain shape near a low frequency cross-over as the low frequency cross-over changes during loop gain modulation.

An active noise reduction earbud and method. The earbud includes a housing comprising an outlet portion that defines a sound outlet, wherein the outlet portion is configured to be located in or proximate the external auditory meatus of a user's ear, a first feedforward microphone configured to develop a first input signal, and a first sound inlet opening in the housing and configured to conduct external sound to be sensed by the first feedforward microphone, wherein the first sound inlet opening is proximate the outlet portion.

Technology described in this document can be embodied in an active noise reduction (ANR) headset earpiece that includes a first microphone disposed on the ANR headset earpiece such that the first microphone is configured to capture a first input signal representing noise traversing a first noise pathway through the ANR headset earpiece, and a second microphone disposed on the ANR headset earpiece such that the second microphone is configured to capture a second input signal representing noise traversing a second noise pathway through the ANR headset earpiece. Positions of the first microphone and the second microphone on the ANR headset earpiece are configured such that a first target level of coherence is achieved at multiple frequencies, the first target level of coherence at a particular frequency representing a fraction of an output signal that can be suppressed using the first input signal and the second input signal together.

Placement of multiple feedforward microphones in an active noise reduction (ANR) system

Technology described in this document can be embodied in a method that includes receiving a first input signal captured by at least a first feedforward microphone associated with an active noise reduction (ANR) device, receiving a second input signal captured by at least a second feedforward microphone associated with the ANR device, processing the first input signal using a first filter disposed in a first ANR signal flow path to generate a first output signal for an acoustic transducer of the ANR device, processing the second input signal using a second filter disposed in a second ANR signal flow path to generate a second output signal for the acoustic transducer, in which the second filter is different from the first filter, and generating a combined signal for the acoustic transducer based on combining the first output signal with the second output signal.

Active noise reduction (ANR) system with multiple feedforward microphones and multiple controllers

A diaphragm and suspension for an electroacoustic transducer are formed by depositing a layer of compliant material on a first surface of a solid substrate and removing material from a second surface of the solid substrate. The removal leaves a block of substrate material suspended within an inner perimeter of an outer support ring of the substrate material by the compliant material, the block providing the diaphragm.
