A side-stream is separated from an oil phase stream that is discharged from a crude oil separator in a gas-oil separation plant. The side-stream contains water and oil. At least a portion of the oil phase stream that is discharged from the crude oil separator in the gas-oil separation plant is flowed to a desalter in the gas-oil separation plant. An electric field is applied across the side-stream to coalesce aqueous droplets present in the side-stream to form an aqueous phase. The aqueous phase is separated from the oil of the side-stream. At least a portion of the aqueous phase is evaporated to form a wastewater phase and a vapor phase. At least a portion of the vapor phase is condensed to produce a wash water. The wash water is flowed to the desalter. The wash water can be referred to washing water or dilution water.

A process for selectively producing oligomers may comprise bringing at least one antifouling agent into contact with a first amount of at least one aluminum alkyl compound to form at least one antifouling compound comprising the structure or its dimeric form; and feeding the at least one antifouling compound, an additional amount of the at least one aluminum alkyl compound, at least one titanate compound, and ethylene into a jet loop reactor and oligomerizing ethylene to produce one or more of 1-butene, 1-hexene, or 1-octene. One or more of the chemical groups R1, R2, and R3 may be the antifouling agent comprising the structure —O((CH)O)R4. n may be an integer of from 1 to 20. m may be an integer of from 1 to 100. R4 may be a hydrocarbyl group. In embodiments, the chemical groups R1, R2, or R3 that do not comprise the antifouling agent, if any, may be hydrocarbyl groups. The at least one titanate compound may be fed as a stream separate from the streams of the at least one antifouling compound and the additional amount of the at least one aluminum alkyl compound. The of the sum of the first amount and the additional amount of the at least one aluminum alkyl compound to the at least one titanate compound may be equal to or higher than 1.5 and equal to or lower than 3.0.

An oil-water separation system including a vessel for receiving an oil-water mixture and passing a treated water having a lower concentration of oil than the oil-water mixture. The system further includes a first overflow baffle for directing the oil-water mixture fluid flow over the first overflow baffle, and a first underflow baffle positioned downstream along a fluid flow pathway of the first overflow baffle for directing the oil-water mixture fluid flow under the first underflow baffle, and a second overflow baffle positioned downstream along the fluid flow pathway of the first underflow baffle having a mesh with a plurality of perforations which directs fluid flow over the second overflow baffle and through the plurality of perforations. The second overflow baffle permits a water portion of the oil-water mixture to traverse through the mesh and an oil portion of the oil-water mixture to traverse over the mesh.

A computer-implemented method includes controlling water separation in a hydrocarbon stream flowing through a separator train including one or more separator vessels located upstream of a dehydrator by manipulating a demulsifier flowrate added to the separator train by: receiving data from a real-time process test of the separation train, estimating model fit parameters to the data to generate a water separation profile (WSP) correlating water draw-off and demulsifier flowrate for the separation train, determining a maximum and a minimum demulsifier flowrate from the WSP, receiving, from an operator, a separation performance for a target water separation value entering the dehydrator downstream from the separator train, and adjusting the demulsifier flowrate according to the WSP to achieve the target water separation entering the dehydrator.

A fluid separation system for separating fluids within a container includes an inlet pipe arranged within the container to receive an incoming fluid stream including first, second, and third fluids. The fluid separation system further includes a fluid distribution device coupled to the inlet pipe and including first and second distribution components for respectively separating the incoming fluid stream into first internal fluid streams and second internal fluid streams within the container. The first and second internal fluid streams each include the first, second, and third fluids. A computer-implemented method includes controlling water separation in a hydrocarbon stream flowing through a separator train including one or more separator vessels located upstream of a dehydrator by adjusting a flowrate of demulsifier added to the separator train by receiving data from a real-time process test of the separation train, quantifying a demulsifier inertia value from the process data, estimating model fit parameters to the process data to generate a water separation profile (WSP) correlating water draw-off and demulsifier flowrate for the separation train, and during operations, modifying the demulsifier flowrate according to the WSP and according to the inertia value to achieve a received target water separation value for the stream entering the dehydrator.

Control of demulsifier injection into crude oil entering separators

The present invention is directed to systems and methods for evaluating performance, performing process control, optimization and design of gravity separation process systems that are used to separate immiscible liquid dispersions (e.g., water-in-oil, oil-in-water mixtures) and emulsions for two-phase (liquid-liquid) or three-phase (gas-liquid-liquid) systems. According to one aspect, the design, simulation and control of such systems is performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software that is configured for determining the separation efficiency of separators on the basis of the true geometry and multidimensional flow field and for a distribution of droplet sizes with the influence of the emulsion concentration on the rheology of the oil-in-water or water-in-oil dispersion. The results of the CFD simulations can be used to adjust input parameters of the separator to maximize the separation efficiency of the separator such that it outputs liquid streams containing minimal amounts of immiscible liquid dispersions.
