Novel latex or emulsion compositions containing internally plasticizing and crosslinkable long-chain alkenol ester monomers are disclosed and claimed. Preferred embodiments include latex formed from acrylate or methacrylate esters of long-chain alkenols. A process for the synthesis of the latex composition is also disclosed, which involves (a) esterification of a long-chain alkenol with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; (b) polymerization of the ethylenically unsaturated ester in an aqueous phase with at least one other copolymerizable monomer; and (b) blending of so formed polymer with at least one drier and a surfactant to form the novel latex or emulsion compositions. These compositions form films at low minimum film forming temperatures (MFT) ranging from &#x2212;5 to 10&#xb0; C. and cure to above ambient glass transition (T) polymers without the use of traditional organic cosolvents which contribute to environmental pollution via volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. These compositions are therefore useful in waterborne coatings, contact and pressure sensitive adhesives, and inks.

Latex compositions containing ethylenically unsaturated esters of long-chain alkenols and applications thereof

Novel latex or emulsion compositions containing internally plasticizing and crosslinkable monomers derived from traditional semi-drying or non-drying oils are disclosed and claimed. The monomers are ethylenically unsaturated derivatives of long-chain olefinic compounds. Preferred embodiments include latex formed from acrylate or methacrylate esters of fatty alcohols. A process for the synthesis of the latex composition is also disclosed, which involves (a) polymerization of the ethylenically unsaturated derivatives of a long-chain olefinic compound in an aqueous phase with at least one other copolymerizable monomer; and (b) blending of so formed polymer with at least one drier and a surfactant to form the novel latex or emulsion compositions. These compositions form films at low minimum film forming temperatures (MFT) ranging from &minus;5 to 10&deg; C. and cure to above ambient glass transition (T ) polymers without the use of traditional organic cosolvents which contribute to environmental pollution via volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. Latex compositions containing ethylenically unsaturated esters of fatty compounds and applications thereof

A process is disclosed for the preparation of imidazole derivatives, in particular, 1-aryl-2-(1-imidazolyl) alkyl ethers and thioethers, and more particular for the preparation of tioconazole. The preferred process involves alpha bromination of thiophene in cyclohexane, coupling with an imidazole to form the crude product, and forming the bisulfate salt thereof. The reaction utilizes less hazardous chemicals than currently employed for the production of 1-aryl-2-(1-imidazolyl) alkyl ethers and thioethers, and may be run at room temperature.

Novel powder coating compositions containing reactive hyperbranched polymers are disclosed and claimed. Preferred embodiments include powder coating compositions formed from hyperbranched polyesters having terminal hydroxy, carboxy, epoxy, and isocyanate groups. Preferred hyperbranched polyesters are formed from .alpha.,.alpha.-bis-(hydroxymethyl)-propionic acid, which act either as crosslinkers, adhesion promotors, or flow and leveling agents. A process for the synthesis of powder coating compositions is also disclosed which involves (a) self condensation of one or more of the multifunctional monomers to form the hyperbranched polymer, optionally, in the presence of suitable reactive end-capping moieties which are described herein; (b) melt blending of the hyperbranched polymer with suitable amounts of one or more of polyesters, epoxy resins, blocked urethane resins, or acrylic resins, a crosslinker, and one or more of suitable additional ingredients including degassers or flow and leveling agents, to form a flake; and (c) grinding and sieving of the flake to form the powder coating composition. These compositions exhibit improved flow and curing properties. These compositions can therefore be formed into thin films and can be cured at low temperatures to form smooth surfaces. Additionally, these films are hard and exhibit enhanced impact resistance properties than the conventional polyester resins. Thus, these powder coating compositions find utilities in automotive, packaging, and appliances.

A method is provided for purifying a crude N-acetyl-para-aminophenol (APAP) containing color bodies or their precursors, the method comprising: a) forming a hot aqueous solution of the crude APAP; and b) subsequently contacting the hot solution with an acid washed adsorbent carbon, e.g., an activated carbon, which acid washed carbon, prior to such contact, has been pretreated by contacting it with an aqueous solution of a reducing sulfite.

Polymer compositions containing substituted pyrazines

An arylisonitrosoalkanone is hydrogenated in the presence of a noble metal catalyst and a weak carboxylic acid to form an arylalkanolamine which is then hydrogenated in the presence of a strong mineral acid and the transition metal catalyst to form an arylalkylamine. When the arylisonitrosoalkanone is an isonitrosoacetophenone, the isonitrosoacetophenone is prepared by one of two methods. In the first method, a substituted or an unsubstituted isonitrosoacetophenone is prepared from a corresponding substituted or unsubstituted acetophenone by oxidizing the acetophenone to form a substituted or an unsubstituted phenylglyoxalacetal in a reactor, hydrolyzing the phenylglyoxal acetal in the same reactor to form a corresponding substituted or unsubstituted phenylglyoxal, and condensing the phenylglyoxal with hydroxylamine or a salt thereof in the same reactor to form the substituted or unsubstituted isonitrosoacetophenone. Alternatively, the substituted or unsubstituted isonitrosoacetophenone is prepared from the corresponding substituted or unsubstituted acetophenone by reacting the substituted or unsubstituted acetophenone in water with a source of a nitrosonium ion in the presence of a strong acid to form a corresponding substituted or unsubstituted phenylglyoxal, and condensing the phenylglyoxal with hydroxylamine or a salt thereof to form the substituted or unsubstituted isonitrosoacetophenone. In either method, any strong acid that might be present in the reaction mass following the condensation to the isonitrosoacetophenone shall be removed therefrom prior to initiating the hydrogenation of the isonitrosoacetophenone to the arylalkanolamine.

Process for preparing substituted and unsubstituted arylalkylamines

A method is provided for purifying crude N-acetyl-para-aminophenol (APAP) containing color bodies or their precursors, the method comprising: a) forming a solution of the crude APAP; and b) subsequently contacting the solution with substoichiometric quantifies of an acetylating agent for a sufficient period of time to convert said color bodies or their precursors to substantially non-color bodies/stable, colorless substances; said quantities of acetylating agent provided is such that substantially none of the APAP is converted to other compounds.
