Multi-layer composites comprising: (a) a first scratch-resistant coating layer comprising a first coating (primer); (b) a thermoplastic layer; and (c) a second scratch-resistant coating layer comprising a second coating (primer); wherein the first scratch-resistant coating layer and the second scratch-resistant coating layer are disposed on opposing sides of the thermoplastic layer; wherein the first coating and the second coating are not the same; and wherein the first scratch-resistant coating layer and the second scratch-resistant coating layer are selected such that a multi-layer composite having the first scratch-resistant layer disposed on both sides of the thermoplastic layer has a lower critical impact speed for tough/brittle transition at &#x2212;30&#xb0; C. according to DIN EN ISO 6603-1 than a multi-layer composite having the second scratch-resistant layer disposed on both sides of the thermoplastic layer; processes for producing the same; and uses therefor.

Asymmetric multi-layer composites and processes for producing the same

A process for the production of a molded article is disclosed. The process comprise a) placing a plastic film abutting the inside wall of a first half of a mold, said mold including a first and second halves, b) combining said second half with said first half in a manner creating a mold cavity, c) injecting resin into said cavity to produce an article to which surface adherently bonded is said plastic film, d) separating one of the halves from the other half, said article remaining with said other half, e) combining a supplemental half with said other half in a manner forming a gap between the inner wall of said supplemental half and the surface of said molded article, f) injecting lacquer into said gap, g) curing the lacquer to produce a lacquered molded article, and h) cooling and removing the lacquered molded article from the mold. The inventive process is particularly suitable for making vehicular mirrors.

Process for the production of a molded article

A process for in-mold coating and a mold is disclosed. The process entails (i) obtaining a mold having at least two cavities, (ii) molding a thermoplastic substrate in a first cavity, (iii) introducing the substrate into a second cavity, and (iv) coating said substrate with lacquer, the coating being carried out under enhanced pressure.
