The process for preparing a composite film for packaging purposes, that includes coextruding polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene-2, 6-naphthalate (PEN) to form a film of polyethylene-2,6-naphthalate. On at least one of the at least one PEN-coated side, a ceramic layer of SiO, where x is number between 0.9 and 2, is deposited by means of the thin-film vacuum process through the simultaneous vaporization of silicon dioxide (SiO) and metallic silicon, or by the vaporization of silicon monoxide (SiO) in a vacuum. Each of the at least one ceramic layers of SiOhaving a thickness of 10 nm to 200 nm. The resultant composite film retains effective permeability barrier effect for water vapor and gases after sterilization in a water bath or in water vapor at a temperature of more than 90&#xb0; C.

A process for manufacturing a packaging film that is transparent to UV light and has a barrier action against water vapor and gases. The packaging film includes a substrate film of a polyolefin or polyamide with a ceramic coating layer of SiO , where x is a number from 1.5 to 1.8. The thickness of the ceramic coating layer is 10 nm to 2 &mgr;m. The ceramic coating layer of SiO is deposited onto the polyolefin or polyamide substrate film using a vacuum thin film deposition process by depositing silicon oxide (SiO ) and elementary silicon (Si) simultaneously in vacuum.

A packaging film which is transparent to UV light and has a barrier action against water vapor and gases features at least one substrate layer of a polyolefin or polyamide with a ceramic coating of SiO.sub.x, where x is a number from 1.5 to 2 and the thickness of the ceramic layer is 10 nm to 2 .mu.m. The packaging film is suitable for packaging basic and luxury foodstuffs that are sterilized in the packaged condition by radiation with UV light.

In certain operating conditions of diesel engines, diesel soot filters which are made of known ceramic foam and filter efficiently per se have zero or only a very low degree of particle filtration, in particular at hight exhaust temperatures and exhaust velocities, that is, above all when the diesel engines are running under full load. Ceramic foam filters for cleaning exhaust gases of diesel engines in which the surface is roughened and wherein the peak-to-peak interval is approximately 1 to 100 .mu.m, preferably 1 to 10 .mu.m, do not have this disadvantage. A ceramic foam of this kind is manufactured by roughening the surface by deposition of inorganic materials and, if required, subsequent decomposition by temperature treatment.
