An volume of a patient can be mapped with a system operable to identify a plurality of locations and save a plurality of locations of a mapping instrument. The mapping instrument can include one or more electrodes that can sense a voltage that can be correlated to a three dimensional location of the electrode at the time of the sensing or measurement. Therefore, a map of a volume can be determined based upon the sensing of the plurality of points without the use of other imaging devices. An implantable medical device can then be navigated relative to the mapping data.

Displacement or migration of a left ventricular lead located within the coronary sinus or coronary veins of the heart is detected by comparing an electrogram (EGM) waveform pattern from the lead with a stored baseline EGM waveform pattern. Based upon the extent of lead migration, if any, a lead displacement may produce an annunciating response. The patient may be alerted, an electrical stimulus applied through the lead may be adjusted to compensate for lead migration, or an alternative electrode on the lead may be used for EGM sensing and pacing.

Techniques for detecting coagulum formation on an ablation electrode make use of an ablation electrode that is connected to a radio-frequency (RF) generator capable of applying a small amount of RF energy that is not cell destructive. The temperature at the ablation electrode can be precisely measured using a thermosensor incorporated within the ablation electrode. Before and after actual ablation, a low, non-cell destructing (non-ablating) amount of RF energy is generated at the ablation electrode. If no coagulum has formed during actual ablation, the temperature increase during this test application will be similar before and after the ablation attempt. If coagulum has formed during the actual ablation, however, the temperature increase during the test application after ablation will be significantly higher.

The control for an ablation catheter provides increased ablation catheter operation feedback and increased options for programmable control of the ablation catheter for clinicians. The control for an ablation catheter has a microcontroller containing memory, an input and output coupled to the microcontroller, a movement program, a comparison program, and an annunciating program. The movement program processes position information from the input to calculate ablation catheter movement. The comparison program compares ablation catheter movement to a predetermined control data.
