A method of making sintered components made from an iron-based powder composition and the sintered component per se. The method is especially suited for producing components which will be subjected to wear at elevated temperatures, consequently the components consists of a heat resistant stainless steel with hard phases including chromium carbo-nitrides. Examples of such components are parts in turbochargers for internal combustion engines.

Method for producing a sintered component and a sintered component

The present invention concerns a method of making sintered components made from an iron-based powder composition and the sintered component per se. The method is especially suited for producing components which will be subjected to wear at elevated temperatures, consequently the components consists of a heat resistant stainless steel with hard phases including chromium carbo-nitrides. Examples of such components are parts in turbochargers for internal combustion engines.

A material which can be used to manufacture components which exhibit high strength and high wear resistance, at the same time possessing reasonable ductility. The material also has cost advantages compared to other potential metal powder solutions. An iron based powder composition which achieves desired microstructure/properties and associated sliding wear resistance with reduced content of expensive alloying ingredients such as admixed elemental Ni and Copper.

Metal powder and use thereof

The present invention provides a low cost pre-alloyed iron based powder which has high compressibility, capable of rendering a compacted and sintered component high green density, (GD), and high sintered density, (SD). Also, a method or process for producing components, especially gears, including compaction of powder mixture containing the pre-alloyed iron-based powder, sintering of the compacted component, Low Pressure carburizing, (LPC), High Pressure Gas Quenching, (HPGQ), and tempering, is provided. In one embodiment, the process includes high temperature sintering. Other aspects of the present invention include a powder mixture containing the pre-alloyed iron based powder and components produced by the new process from the powder mixture. Such carburized components exhibit a hard surface combined with a softer and tougher core, necessary properties for e.g. automotive gears subjected to harsh environment.

An annealed prealloyed water atomised iron-based powder is provided which is suitable for the production of pressed and sintered components having high wear resistance. The iron-based powder comprises 15-30% by weight of Cr, 0.5-5% by weight of each of at least one of Mo, W and V, and 0.5-2%, preferably 0.7-2% and most preferably 1-2% by weight of C. The powder has a matrix comprising less than 10% by weight of Cr, and comprises large chromium carbides. A method for production of the iron-based powder also is provided.

Metallurgical powder composition and method of production

An annealed pre-alloyed water atomised iron-based powder suitable for the production of pressed and sintered components having high wear resistance is provided. The iron-based powder comprises 10-below 18% by weight of Cr, 0.5-5% by weight of each of at least one of Mo, W, V and Nb, and 0.5-2%, preferably 0.7-2% and most preferably 1-2% by weight of C. The powder has a matrix comprising less than 10% by weight of Cr, and comprises large MC-type carbides in combination with MC-type carbides. A method for production of the iron-based powder, a method for producing a pressed and sintered component having high wear resistance, and a component having high wear resistance are provided.

The present invention relates to a wear resistant iron-based powder, suitable for the production of pressed and sintered components, comprising 10-20% by weight of Cr, 0.5-5% by weight of Mo and 1-2% by weight of C. The powder is characterised in that it includes pre-alloyed water atomized iron-based powder particles and chromium carbide particles diffusion bonded onto said pre-alloyed powder particles. The invention also relates to a method of producing this powder.

Specific chromium, molybdenum and carbon iron-based metallurgical powder composition capable of better compressibility and method of production

The invention concerns a stainless steel powder comprising at least 10% chromium by weight. The powder further comprises vanadium in an amount of at least 4 times the amount of carbon and nitrogen. Preferably the steel powder comprises 10-30% chromium, 0.1-1% vanadium, 0.5-1.5% silicon, at least 0.1% carbon and at least 0.07% nitrogen. The invention also concerns a powder metallurgical composition containing said steel powder, a process for preparing and a compacted and sintered part made of said composition.
