A method of fluidly connecting coaxially aligned first and second couplings (), wherein the both couplings () have an inner high pressure passage () and a coaxial outer lower pressure passage (). Initially the first coupling inner high pressure passage () is fluidly connected with the first outer lower pressure passage () while isolating the second coupling inner high pressure passage () and the coaxial outer lower pressure passage (). Then the first coupling inner high pressure passage () and one of the second coupling inner and outer passages () is fluidly connected with the first coupling coaxial outer lower pressure passage () while isolating the other of the second coupling inner and outer passages (). Finally the first coupling inner high pressure passage () is fluidly connected with the second coupling inner high pressure passage () and the first coupling coaxial outer lower pressure passage () is fluidly connected with the second coupling coaxial outer lower pressure passage ().

Coaxial quick disconnect coupling

A quick disconnect coupler apparatus fluidly connecting coaxially aligned first and second couplings (), wherein the both couplings () have an inner high pressure passage () and a coaxial outer lower pressure passage (). Initially the first coupling inner high pressure passage () is fluidly connected with the first outer lower pressure passage () while isolating the second coupling inner high pressure passage () and the coaxial outer lower pressure passage (). Then the first coupling inner high pressure passage () and one of the second coupling inner and outer passages () is fluidly connected with the first coupling coaxial outer lower pressure passage () while isolating the other of the second coupling inner and outer passages (). Finally the first coupling inner high pressure passage () is fluidly connected with the second coupling inner high pressure passage () and the first coupling coaxial outer lower pressure passage () is fluidly connected with the second coupling coaxial outer lower pressure passage ().

A female coupler for use as a fluid connector having an exterior portion, an interior portion, a poppet valve and a piston. The exterior portion has an internal bore with an open forward end adapted to receive a male coupler, a flow port for supplying pressurized fluid to the internal bore, an internal surface with at least one groove and at least one outlet passage through the exterior portion fluidly communicating with the at least one groove. The interior portion has a main cavity and an internal valve seat and is disposed within the housing bore and axially movable within the exterior portion from a first position, in which fluid is sealed within the female coupler, to a second position in which fluid can exit the female coupler. The poppet valve is slidably received within the interior portion and spring-biased forwardly against the valve seat to normally prevent fluid flow through the interior portion. The generally annular piston is disposed and slidably received within the exterior portion and includes a tubular main portion disposed within the interior portion, a radially enlarged annular end portion which engages said interior portion when moved axially to assist in moving the poppet valve and a central bore for receiving fluid flow.

Quick coupling with pressure assist piston

A quick-connect coupling includes a male half and a female half, where the female half includes a locking mechanism to couple the male half to the female half; and a valve assembly, which when the male half is coupled to the female half, opens a flow path through the coupling. The valve assembly includes an upstream, pressure balanced secondary valve and a downstream primary valve. The secondary valve maintains the downstream portion of the female coupling half at zero pressure, such that the male half can be easily connected. When the male half is removed, the primary and secondary valves of the valve assembly close to prevent fluid flow through the coupling. The female coupling also allows pressure to escape from the downstream end of the female half to atmosphere, should there be leakage around seals in the secondary valve after the female coupling half is disconnected.

A quick disconnect female coupler comprises, inter alia, a wiper seal retained in a radially opening annular groove and including at its rear side an annular recess that allows rearward rolling of the wiper seal in the annular groove when the wiper seal is subjected to a surge of high pressure fluid from the main cavity to the back side of the piston, whereby the wiper seal moves out of the way of the high pressure fluid surge to avoid being forced out of the annular groove; a tubular spacer in the female housing bore the forms therewith an outer flow passage and which serves as a guide for an axially movable valve body, the spacer having an annular land and a rear end post press-fitted in the housing bore and a housing counterbore, respectively, for retaining and aligning the spacer in the housing; a poppet valve provided with orifices in an angled shoulder thereof for avoiding interference with flow previously caused by coil springs used to bias the poppet valve; and an annular protection shield which performs the dual functions of retaining a collar spring in a locking collar chamber and providing a barrier to entry of foreign material into the locking collar chamber.

Quick disconnect coupling

A female coupler includes a housing adapted to receive a male coupler. A port is provided in the housing for supplying pressurized fluid to the bore. A cylindrical valve body is disposed in the bore and is axially movable in the housing. The valve body includes an interior annular valve seat. A cylindrical poppet valve is normally spring biased against the valve seat and includes a projection adapted to engage a valve member in the male coupler. A cylindrical piston is closely received about the poppet valve and disposed between the poppet valve and the valve body. The piston includes an axial passage which fluidly interconnects an inlet passage of the valve body to the rear surface of the piston. When the piston moves forwardly, the piston engages an enlarged head on the poppet valve. The fluid passage through the piston facilitates moving the piston, and hence the poppet valve forwardly against the valve member and the male coupler when there are excessive pressures contained in the male coupler. The piston can also include an annular wiper seal which is sealable against a relief poppet and poppet guide assembly to allow fluid to flow rearwardly to the rear surface of the piston, but prevent flow forwardly through the female coupler.

Hydraulic quick disconnect coupling

A female coupling includes an outer housing and a cartridge removably mounted in the housing. The cartridge includes a retainer sleeve which is stationary within the housing, a valve body and a spool attached to the valve body which are slidable axially within the housing, and a valve which is slidable axially within the valve body. A seal on the retainer sleeve seals a port in the spool when the female coupling is connected to a male coupling, and the spool is axially movable relative to the seal to relieve the internal pressure in the female coupling during connection and disconnection of the male coupling. A piston is slidably mounted within the valve body to assist in closing the valve during disconnection.

A shrouded type fluid coupling is provided with a valve in the shroud for permitting fluid flow through the shroud in one direction and for preventing fluid flow through the shroud in the opposite direction.

A dust cap for a fluid coupling includes a generally cylindrical body which is mounted on the coupling and an end wall at one end of the cylindrical body. The end wall is provided with a slit therein for permitting another coupling to be inserted through the end wall and a stress relief opening at each end of the slit. A flexible and resilient flap covers each of the stress relief openings, and a fluid drain port is provided in the cylindrical body.

A hydraulic quick disconnect coupling wherein the female half is free of external moving parts and a spring loaded internal fitting is employed to maintain the halves in either coupled or uncoupled condition.

A quick disconnect coupling having locked valving wherein balls interposed between a shiftable valve element and a stationary guide and which normally emerge during valve seating are blocked by movement of a spring loaded sleeve responsive to high flow conditions from the male half to the female half.

A quick disconnect female coupling is provided with a lever-operated valve. The lever operates a cam inside the coupling which pulls open the valve assembly of the female coupling and pushes a plunger which opens the valve of a male coupling which is connected to the female coupling. The push-pull action of the cam provides straight linear forces for opening the valves, and the cam is positioned within a large flow passage in the female coupling rather than near the valve.

Lever-type quick disconnect coupling

A quick disconnect coupling comprising a female coupling and a male coupling is provided with shrouding around the valves of the couplings. The female coupling includes a poppet slidably mounted within a shroud, and fluid can flow freely between the shroud and the poppet so that the poppet will close quickly when the couplings are disconnected. The male coupling includes a ball valve mounted within the shroud, and fluid can flow freely between the shroud and the ball so that the ball will close quickly when the couplings are disconnected. The elongated parts of the poppet of the female coupling and the shroud of the male coupling are formed from deep drawn sheet metal.

A lever-type quick disconnect female coupling for coaction with a check-valve equipped male coupling is provided with a movable valve member which functions both as a sealing valve for the female coupling and a push member for opening the check valve of the male coupling.
