Frames of a first and second type with a common preamble that are periodically transmitted by a master device () are received at a slave device () that is maintained in a low powered mode, and periodically set in a higher-powered mode to receive and process the received frames based on a slave clock () in a period prior to an expected transmission of the common preamble of each frame from the master device () to detect a preamble extension of a frame of the second type in the period. The slave device () returns to a low powered mode when no preamble extension is detected in the period. Information is received from and/or transmitted to the master device () by the slave device () when a preamble extension is detected. The slave device () is returned to the low powered mode after the information has been received and/or transmitted.

Slave and master devices and methods using a preamble extension to set a power mode

A padlock is provided with a transceiver to enable authorisation of an unlocking action by an authority. To control power consumption, a motion detector is used to activate the device from a dormant, low power consumption state.

An apparatus, method, and system for detecting an object in an environment. The apparatus comprises: a processor configured to: control an active reflected wave detector to measure wave reflections from the environment to accrue measured wave reflection data; process the measured wave reflection data to detect an object in said environment; in response to detection of said object, determine whether a first predetermined condition in respect of the object is met; and if the first predetermined condition is met, control an output device to output a deterrent.

Detecting an object in an environment

A security response device is capable of being held in a communications mode or a power saving mode. In the communications mode, it is capable of sending a security threat message to a base station and of receiving a response. In the power saving mode, it is capable of detecting security threats but not performing communication functions. Detection of a security threat causes the device to exit the power saving mode and enter the communications mode.

A method of operating a sensing component for sensing a magnetic field to determine a state of an access point having a first component and a second component that are separable from each other to create an opening and wherein a magnet is mounted on one of the first or second components of the access point, wherein the method comprises: operating the sensing component to sense a magnetic field in multiple dimensions to produce a sample representation of the sensed magnetic field, wherein the sample representation is a multi-dimensional representation and determining whether the sample representation is in a pre-determined region about a reference representation that is representative of a state of an access point to determine that the sensed magnetic field corresponds to said state of the access point, wherein the pre-determined region comprises a circular cross-section.

Sensing device for access point

Embodiments relate to a device for mounting on a wall for monitoring an environment. In one embodiment the device comprises: a body comprising: an active reflected wave detector; and a processor coupled to the active reflected wave detector, the processor configured to: control the active reflected wave detector to measure wave reflections from the environment to accrue measured wave reflection data, and identify a status of a person in the environment based on the measured wave reflection data, wherein the processor assumes, for said identification, that the active reflected wave detector is at an operating height above a floor of the environment. The device comprises a cord extending from the body, the cord having a length for ending at the floor when the device is mounted with the active reflected wave detector at said operating height and the cord is freely hanging and straight.

Device and method for determining a status of a person

Security device

A location of a person is identified. A controller core is configured for interfacing with a plurality of sensing devices at a plurality of locations. Each sensing device has a sensor for detecting a threat-condition and an acoustic sensor for generating an acoustic indicator indicative of an incident acoustic wave. The controller core is configured to: (i) upon receiving a trigger, instruct wireless transmission to the sensing devices, of a request for an acoustic indicator generated in the sensing device, wherein the request configures each of the sensing devices to activate a process in respect of an incident acoustic wave; (ii) receive one or more of said requested acoustic indicators; and (iii) based on the received one or more acoustic indicators, identify a location of the person () within the building.

Identifying a location of a person

A device may monitor an entry to or exit from a space via an access point. The entry access point has a first component and a second component that are separable from each other to create an opening for the entry or exit. The device may comprise a first part for mounting to one of said components and which has a processing component and a sensing component for sensing in multiple dimensions a magnetic field emanating from a second part mounted on the other of the first and second components. The processing component is configured: to receive an indication of the sensed magnetic field; detect a change of condition at the access point when a dynamic quality of the indication of the sensed magnetic field satisfies a predefined criterion; and output an indication of the detected change of condition. There may be a corresponding system, method and memory.

Magnetic field sensor for an access point

A sensor unit comprising; a magnetic sensor adapted to detect a magnetic field; a light source adapted to transmit a radiation having a signature; a reflecting member for reflecting radiation emitted by the light source; a radiation sensor adapted to detect radiation reflected by the reflecting member; a controller adapted to generate a signal indicative of a security breach when the magnetic field is detected by the magnetic sensor and the signature is not identified in the radiation received by the radiation sensor.

Intrusion detecting sensors and method

A hub device is disclosed comprising a first antenna communicating with a peripheral device, a second antenna communicating with a remote station. In a first operation mode, transmission by the first antenna is at a first bit rate. Operation may be triggered to switch to a second mode in which a stream of data is received from the remote station, and there is a transmission to the first peripheral device, of data derived from the data stream, the transmission being from the first antenna while the stream of data is being received on the second antenna. In the second mode, the transmission from the first antenna is at a second bit rate that is faster than the first bit rate such that transmitting the derived data at the second bit rate uses a shorter duty cycle than required to transmit the derived data at the first bit rate.

A system and method including receiving an activity signal from a detection unit, the activity signal indicative of detected activity, responsive to the received activity signal exceeding a predetermined threshold, switching a digital microphone from a default low-power mode to active mode, and a pre-determined period of time after switching the digital microphone to active mode, switching the digital microphone back to the default low-power mode.
