The present invention relates to a plasma display panel, and more specifically, a method and an apparatus for driving a plasma display panel. According to the present invention, a method for driving a plasma display panel in which pluralities of first electrodes and second electrodes are arranged parallel and to each other adjacently on an upper substrate, a plurality of third electrodes is arranged to cross the pairs of first and second electrodes at electrode crossing areas and define corresponding discharge cells at the electrode crossing areas on an lower substrate, wherein said method for driving a plasma display panel comprises steps of: forming wall charges on the upper and lower substrate by applying first rising ramp waveform to said first electrodes during a first period of a reset period; erasing partly the wall charges which are formed on the upper substrate by applying second rising ramp waveform to said second electrodes during a second period of a reset period; erasing partly the wall charges which are formed on the upper and lower substrates by applying falling ramp waveform to said first and second electrodes during a third period of a reset period; selecting the discharge cells by applying data voltage to said third electrodes and applying scan voltage to said first electrodes during a address period; and displaying an image on screen by applying sustain voltage to said first and second electrodes alternatively during a sustain period.

Method and apparatus for driving plasma display panel

Disclosed are a plasma display apparatus and a driving method thereof. The plasma display apparatus comprise a plasma display panel having a scan electrode and a sustain electrode, a scan driver for sequentially supplying a first rising ramp waveform, a first falling ramp waveform and a second falling ramp waveform to the scan electrode during the reset period of the first subfield of a plurality of subfields, and a sustain driver for supplying a round waveform to the sustain electrode while the first rising ramp waveform is being supplied to the scan electrode. In the driving method of a plasma display apparatus, which divides a plurality of subfields with a different number of times of light emission into a rest period, an address period and a sustain period, and displays an image by applying a signal to the scan electrode, sustain electrode and address electrode in the respective periods, a surface discharge occurs two times between the scan electrode and the sustain electrode in the reset period of the first subfield of the plurality of subfields, and an opposite discharge occurs between the scan electrode and the address electrode.

A radio frequency plasma display panel that is capable of reducing a discharge voltage. In the plasma display panel, a dielectric material is entirely coated on a substrate and is patterned to have a convex surface. A first electrode crossing the dielectric pattern is formed on the substrate, and a dielectric layer is entirely coated on the substrate provided with the dielectric pattern and the first electrode. A second electrode crossing the first electrode is formed on a concave groove area in the dielectric layer having a wave shape with lands and grooves.

A plasma display panel having a structure that is capable of reducing a discharge area to decrease a discharge power. In the panel, first and second electrodes for generating a radio frequency discharge are arranged to be opposite and perpendicular to each other. The two electrodes generating the radio frequency discharge are perpendicularly arranged to limit the luminous area into the perpendicular area, thereby reducing a discharge power and improving the luminescence efficiency.
