Aluminium alloys suitable for etched and anodized components, in particular aluminum extrusion alloys of the types containing Magnesium and Silicon, which after being extruded to any wide variety of forms for different applications such as house buildings and other building applications is subjected to etching in a conventional alkaline etching bath and subsequent anodizing, wherein the relation between Cu and Zn is controlled to avoid preferential grain etching and the ratio of Cu/Zn is below 1.

Method and means for suppressing discoloration during thermal treatment of a product of a magnesium containing aluminium alloy, the alloy contains in wt. % Mg: 0.45-12.0, with a preferred range of 0.45-6.0 wt %. The product, being either an extrusion billet, a sheet ingot, a cast product, or a forged product is heated to a temperature T where it is prone to surface discoloration and oxidation, wherein during the thermal treatment it is exposed to a suppressing atmosphere comprising 0.5-5.0% COgas with a preference for 0.5-1.5% COgas.

Method for producing structural components from heat treatable aluminum alloys based on extruded material, in particular AA 6xxx series alloys, the components having improved crush properties and being particular applicable in crash zones of vehicles, such as longitudinals and crash boxes, the method including the following steps: a. casting a billet from said alloy by DC casting, b. homogenizing the cast billet, c. forming a profile from the billet by extrusion, preferably a hollow section d. optionally, separate solution heat treatment, e. quenching the profile down to room temperature after the forming step and the possible separate solutionising step, f. stretching the extruded or the separate solutionised profile to obtain at least 1.5% plastic deformation, g. artificially ageing the profile.

Extrudeable Al&#x2014;Mg&#x2014;Si aluminum alloy with improved strength, corrosion resistance, crush properties and temperature stability, in particular useful in or close to the front part of vehicles. The composition of the alloy is defined within the following coordinate points of an Mg&#x2014;Si diagram: a1-a2-a3-a4, where in wt % a1=0.60 Mg, 0.65Si, a2=0.90Mg, 1.0Si, a3=1.05Mg, 0.75Si and a4=0.70Mg, 0.50Si and where the alloy has a non-recrystallized grain structure in the extruded profile containing in addition the following alloy components in wt %: Fe up to 0.30 Cu 0.1-0.4 Mn 0.4-1.0 Cr up to 0.25 Zr up to 0.25 and Ti 0.005-0.15 incidental impurities up to 0.1 each and including Zn up to 0.5 with balance Al.

Al&#x2014;Mg&#x2014;Si aluminium alloy with improved properties

A screw extruder for the continuous extrusion of materials with high viscosity, in particular metals such as aluminum and its alloys. The extruder includes an Archimedes screw () rotationally provided within a liner () of a screw housing () having an inlet () for the feeding of the material to be extruded, a compacting or extrusion chamber () and an extrusion die assembly with a die () which forms the shape of the extruded product (). The required compaction takes place at the down-stream end of the screw towards the extrusion chamber () corresponding to up to 540&#xb0; of the rotation of the screw, or up to 1.5 turns of the screw flight length. The solid plug of metal formed at the end of the screw and extrusion chamber () is restricted from rigid rotation to obtain the required compaction and extrusion pressure.

Aluminum alloy containing Mg and Si, in particular useful for extrusion purposes containing in wt %:  The manganese (Mn), within the specified limits, has an additional positive effect on the extrudability of an AlMgSi alloy. In addition to promoting the transformation of the AlFeSi intermetallic phases, AlMnFeSi dispersoid particles are formed during homogenization. These particles are acting as nucleation sites for MgSi particles during cooling after homogenization. In a high quality billet the MgSi particles formed during cooling after homogenization should easily dissolve during the preheating and the extrusion operation before the material reach the die opening.

Al-Mg-Si alloy suited for extrusion

The present invention concerns procedures for producing an alloy from a eutectic alloy system, in order to form a workpiece for rolling or extrusion purposes by, for example, producing an Al&mdash;Mg&mdash;Si alloy, which can be precipitation-hardened, which alloy, after having been heated to a temperature above the solubility temperature of phases which can be precipitated, is kept at this temperature until the phases have dissolved and is cooled at a cooling rate which is rapid enough to avoid most of the precipitation of the phases and slow enough to avoid most of the precipitation of dispersoid particles. At cooling rates within this interval, most coarse phases which have a reductive effect on the processing rate can be avoided and, at the same time, the number of small dispersoid particles which have a reductive effect on the mechanical properties after hardening is limited.

Method for the production of alloys form eutectic alloy systems

The apparatus includes a housing ( ) provided with openings ( ) for axial passage of the billet through the housing, a cooling ring ( ) arranged inside of the housing, and supply lines ( ) for supplying a cooling medium to the housing.
