The present specification provides a method and device for determining a disturbance condition in a power transmission line. The method may include obtaining a plurality of sample values corresponding to an electrical parameter measured in each phase. The method may further include determining a plurality of magnitudes of the electrical parameter corresponding to each phase based on the corresponding plurality of sample values and determining a plurality of difference values for each phase based on the corresponding plurality of magnitudes. The method may include processing the plurality of difference values using a machine learning technique to determine the disturbance condition. The disturbance condition may be one of a load change condition, a power swing condition, or an electrical fault condition. The method may also include performing at least one of a protection function or a control function based on the disturbance condition.

Machine learning based method and device for disturbance classification in a power transmission line

A method can be used for fault location in a power transmission line connecting a first terminal with a second terminal. Arrival times of a first peak and a second peak of travelling waves are detected from measurements carried out at the first and second terminals. a rough location of a fault is identified based on a comparison of the arrival times obtained for the travelling waves detected from the measurements carried out at the first terminal, and the arrival times obtained for the travelling waves detected from the measurements carried out at the second terminal. The fault location is estimated based the rough location, the arrival times of the first and second peaks of the travelling waves detected from measurements carried out at the first and second terminals, and a length of the power transmission line.

Parameter free traveling wave based fault location for power transmission lines

A method of protection can be used in response to a fault in a multi-terminal power transmission system that includes a first transmission line section connecting a first terminal to a transmission line junction, a second transmission line section connecting a second terminal to the transmission line junction and a third transmission line section connecting a third terminal to the transmission line junction. The fault being located in one of the first, second or third transmission line sections. The section having the fault can be determined based on a number of calculations and other factors and a switching device can be controlled according to the identification of the section having the fault.

Method and device for fault location in a multi-terminal transmission system

Examples of operating an Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) during power swings, are described. In an example, voltage measurements for a phase is received and sampled. Root mean square (RMS) values of the voltage samples is calculated based on the voltage measurements. Delta quantities for each phase are calculated based on the RMS values. Each of the RMS values and delta quantities are associated with respective sampling instants. In response to a delta quantity being greater than a predefined threshold, a peak delta quantity is detected. A time interval between a sampling instant associated with the peak delta quantity and a sampling instant associated with a first delta quantity is determined. Based on a comparison of the time interval with a threshold time, a disturbance condition may be detected as a power swing and consequently, fault detection at the IED may be blocked.

Intelligent electronic device operation during power swing

The invention relates to protection from faults in a power transmission system having two or more transmission lines. Travelling waves are detected from a signal obtained with a measurement equipment associated with a bus of the power transmission system. Arrival times of a first peak of a first travelling wave, a second travelling wave and a third travelling wave, are detected from the signal. A value for line length is calculated from the arrival times and propagation velocity of the travelling wave in the corresponding transmission line. The calculated value is compared with an actual length of the corresponding transmission line, for determining if the fault is an internal fault or an external fault. According to the fault being one of the internal fault and the external fault, a signal for controlling a switching device associated with the corresponding transmission line is generated.

Accelerated zone-2 protection for transmission lines

A method and device can be used with a power transmission line. Pre-fault voltage and current phasors and during-fault voltage and current phasors for each of first, second, and third terminals are determined based on disturbance records. Using an assumed faulted section, values for a propagation constant of each section, a surge impedance of each section, and a fault location parameter are computed. The computing is based on simultaneously solving pre-fault and during-fault objective functions for the assumed faulted section with the computed pre-fault and during-fault voltage and current phasors. The pre-fault and during-fault objective functions are formulated based on equating junction voltages determined from two of the terminals, conservation of charge at the junction, and equating fault location voltages determined from one terminal and the junction. The values determined for the propagation constant, the surge impedance, and the fault location parameter can be compared with predefined criteria.

Parameter free identification of fault location in multi-terminal power transmission lines

A device can be used with a power transmission system that includes three section that are connected at a junction, each section being from a corresponding. An input interface receives measurements of voltages and currents carried out at one or more of the first terminal, the second terminal and the third terminal or positive sequence voltage and current phasors obtained from the measurements of voltages and currents carried out at one or more of the first terminal, the second terminal and the third terminal. A phasor calculation module calculates positive sequence voltage and current phasors from the measurements of voltages and currents carried out at a terminal of the power transmission system. A fault locator obtains the fault location based on the section with the fault, the positive sequence voltage and current phasors obtained for each terminal, and the positive sequence line impedance parameters of each section.

Fault location in multi-terminal tapped lines

A method can be used to determine a fault location in a power transmission line that connects a first terminal with a second terminal. Parameters associated with travelling waves are detected from measurements carried out at the first and second terminals. The parameters include arrival times of first and second peaks of the travelling waves at the first and second terminals respectively, and rise times of the first peaks of corresponding travelling waves. A first half, a second half, or a mid-point of the power transmission line is identified as having a fault based on the parameters. The fault location can be estimated based on the arrival times of the first and second peaks of the travelling waves detected from measurements carried out at the first and second terminals, a velocity of propagation of the travelling wave in the power transmission line, and/or a length of the power transmission line.

Traveling wave based fault location using unsynchronized measurements for transmission lines

Techniques for identifying faulty sections in power transmission lines are described. A first positive sequence voltage and first positive sequence current at a first terminal of a power transmission line are computed based on a first voltage and first current at the first terminal. A second positive sequence voltage and second positive sequence current at a second terminal are computed based on a second voltage and second current. Based on the first positive sequence voltage and the first positive sequence current, a first junction voltage and first junction current from the first terminal at a junction are computed. Based on the second positive sequence voltage and the second positive sequence current, a second junction voltage and second junction current from the second terminal are computed. A ratio of a junction voltage parameter to a junction current parameter is computed. Using the ratio, the faulty section is identified.

Identification of faulty section of power transmission line

The invention provides a method and system for protection in response to a fault in a mixed line. The mixed line comprises two or more sections, with a first substation at a first end and a second substation at a second end. Every two consecutive sections of the mixed line are separated at a junction. The method is performed by an IED, and comprises obtaining one or more measurements of current at the first end, and one or more measurements of current at the second end. The method also comprises identifying a section of the two or more sections having the fault, by estimating a value of current for each junction and comparing the estimated value with the one or more measurements of current. In addition, the method comprises controlling a switching device based on the section identified with the fault.

Method and system for protection in a mixed line

The invention provides an Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) and a method for locating a fault in a power transmission line with the IED. The method comprises measuring arrival times of a first, second and third peak of a travelling wave, using measurements obtained with one or more measurement equipment connected with the power transmission line. The method further comprises generating two or more initial estimates for the location of the fault, estimating time of initiation of the travelling wave, and estimating an arrival time of the third peak. The estimated arrival time of the third peak is compared with the measured arrival time of the third peak, to select an initial estimate of the two or more initial estimates as the location of the fault.

Travelling wave based method for locating a fault in a transmission line and device therefor

The invention provides a method and device for fault section identification in a multi-terminal mixed line. The method comprises obtaining positive sequence voltage and current phasors from measurements of voltages and currents at each terminal of the mixed line. The method further comprises calculating a voltage phasor for each terminal, wherein the calculation of the voltage phasor for a first terminal is performed using at least the voltage and current phasors obtained for one of a second terminal and a third terminal, and the current phasor obtained for the first terminal. Thereafter, the method comprises determining a section of the mixed line having the fault, based on comparison of the calculated and obtained voltage phasors for each terminal. In addition, the method comprises controlling a switching device with a re-trip signal generated based on the determination of the section with the fault.

Method and device for fault section identification in multi-terminal mixed lines

A method is provided for protection in a mixed power transmission line by controlling a switching device connected thereto through an Intelligent Electronic Device (IED). The mixed line has two or more sections with at least one overhead section (A) and at least one underground section (B), wherein every two consecutive sections are connected at a junction (C). The method is implemented by the IED (), which receives a signal from a measurement equipment. The IED detects a travelling wave from the signal, and determines a first peak of the travelling wave and at least one a peak width, a rise time and a discharge time of the first peak. The IED identifies the section with the fault based on a comparison of at least one of the peak width, the rise time and the discharge time with a corresponding threshold value of each junction, and controls the switching device based on the comparison.
