In one embodiment is a thermoplastic vulcanizates having improved extrusion properties formed from a composition that includes from 20% to about 80% by weight of an elastomer, from about 80% to about 20% by weight of a thermoplastic, from about 0.05 to about 12 phr of a multifunctional methacrylate monomer peroxide curing coagent; and from about 0.02 to about 6 phr of a phosphorous containing stabilizer. The resultant thermoplastic vulcanizate may be cured with a peroxide curing agent and shows improved die lip build up compared to conventionally prepared thermoplastic vulcanizates. Methods of forming thermoplastic vulcanizates having improved die lip build up are also taught.

Thermoplastic vulcanizate compositions having improved extrusion performance and methods of formation thereof

A method of preparing a thermoplastic vulcanizate, the method comprising continuously dynamically vulcanizing a rubber within a blend with a thermoplastic resin, where the dynamic vulcanization is effected with a cure system that includes a free-radical cure agent, and a coagent-wetted carrier where the coagent-wetted carrier includes a multi-functional acrylate coagent, a multi-functional methacrylate coagent, or both a multi-functional acrylate and multi-functional methacrylate coagent.

Peroxide-cured thermoplastic vulcanizates and process for making the same

Thermoplastic vulcanizates having improved physical properties, including extrusion surface roughness can be achieved by a method that includes a first processing step to form a fully cured TPV base, a cooling step wherein the fully cured TPV base is solidified and a second processing step which imparts improved physical properties including improved extrusion surface roughness to the resultant TPV. The method may be adapted for use in conjunction with a peroxide curing agents to protect a portion of the thermoplastic, which may be polypropylene, from degradation by the peroxide curing agent. The adaptation to the methods may include the addition of a portion of the thermoplastic to the TPV after the peroxide curing agent has been added. The adaptation may also include one or more devolatalization steps with or without the addition of a stripping agent.

Method for improving extrusion surface smoothness in thermoplastic vulcanizates

A process for the for the preparation of dynamically vulcanized thermoplastic elastomers is described. The process comprises melt processing under high shear conditions A) at least one thermoplastic engineering resin, B) at least one vulcanizable rubber, C) a curing agent or curing agents, and D) at least one additional thermoplastic engineering resin in the form of solid particles having an effective diameter of not less than 0.05 mm, wherein said solid particles D) are added to a molten mass of A), B) before, during or after the addition of C) but prior to substantial completion of the vulcanization of B). The process provides a means to avoid substantial degradation or unwanted cross-linking of the thermoplastic engineering resin and provides a means of controlling the reaction temperature during the curing, vulcanization, or cross-linking of the rubber.
