A method of timing an attempt to establish a connection path between a first and second node in a communications network is provided. The method initiates the attempt to establish a connection path after a period of time has elapsed wherein the period of time is greater than another period of time which had previously elapsed between two previous attempts, if any, to establish the connection.

MPLS implementation of an ATM platform

A method and apparatus for communicating data packets according to classes of service is described. One or more service interfaces are coupled to a plurality of transport interfaces. The service interfaces carry packets having multiple classes of service, while each of the plurality of transport interfaces carries packets of a single class of service. A differentiated services codepoint profile is associated with each service interface and maps a differentiated services codepoint value of a data packet to a class of service and a drop precedence. The data packet is assigned to a transport interface based on its class of service and its drop precedence. Other factors, such as the destination of the data packet may be considered when assigning the data packet to a transport interface. Data packets from different transport interfaces are preferably enqueued in different queues of a destination service interface.

A computer communications network comprises a plurality of interconnected ATM switches forming a WAN or LAN area network over which ATM cells are transmitted, and a plurality of user devices including LAN interface adapters for connection to one or more to local area networks (LANs). An interface device connects at least some of the respective ATM switches to the LAN interface adapters. The interface adapts the ATM cells for transport over the LANS. The user devices can thus communicate through the LAN interface adapters transparently with the wide area network.

A system and method of configuring a communications path in a communications network from a start node to an end node through intermediate nodes is provided by: establishing a partial path for the communications path from the start node to a terminating node in the intermediate nodes; and at the terminating node, if a communications link to a next-hop node does not exist in the intermediate nodes, then establishing the terminating node as an interim egress node for the communications path; and notifying the start node of mapping parameters for the partial communications path.

A system and method of operating a communications network having a plurality of interconnected nodes is provided by: establishing a connection path from an ingress node to an egress node through intermediate nodes; associating the connection path with a network-wide unique identification; on the ingress node, storing the path identification so as to indicate that the path originates at the ingress node; on each intermediate node, storing the path identification so as to indicate that the path transits the intermediate node; and on the egress node, storing the path identification so as to indicate that the path terminates at the ingress node.

System and method of operating a communication network associated with an MPLS implementation of an ATM platform

A method and apparatus for converting UBR and nrt-VBR connections to ABR connections in an ATM network is presented. In response to receiving a connection set-up message for a UBR or nrt-VBR connection, it is determined it is determined whether the port contemplating conversion is commissioned as a conversion port, which enables it to perform such conversions. If the port is a conversion port, it is determined whether or not the port type of the ingress port and the port type of the egress port support connection format conversion. If the port types support connection format conversion, it is determined whether or not the set-up message for the connection indicates that the connection is conversion enabled. If the connection is conversion enabled and the ports are of the right configuration, the set-up message is converted from the nrt-VBR or UBR format to an ABR format for transmission. Upon determination that the connection has successfully been established, the data packets for the connection are converted to ABR format and transmitted through the data communications network.

Method and apparatus for connection format conversion in a communications network

A method is disclosed for establishing a switched virtual circuit in a digital network having network nodes with static routing tables. The static routing tables contain at least primary and alternate routing data. When a node is unable to forward a call over its outgoing primary route due to congestion or physical failure and its alternate route is the same as the route on which a call setup request arrived, it clears the call at that node and sends a crankback message to the preceding node, which responds to the crankback message to attempt to dynamically re-route the call over the alternate route stored in the routing table of the preceding node. If the attempt is unsuccessful, it sends the message back to the next preceding node and so on.
