The present invention relates to a composition comprising:

A liquid concentrate comprises between about 4 and about 25 wt % of 4,5-dichloro-2-(n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one), between about 25 and about 88 wt % of a plasticizer in which said isothiazolinone compound is soluble and between about 8 and about 50 wt % of benzyl alcohol which stabilizes the concentrate against crystallization and/or freezing at sub-freezing conditions.

Low temperature-stabilized isothiazolinone concentrates

A liquid concentrate comprises between about 4 and about 10 wt % of an isothiazolinone compound or mixture of isothiazolinone compounds, between about 25 and about 92 wt % of a plasticizer in which said isothiazolinone compound is soluble and between about 4 and about 50 wt % of 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether. The 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether stabilizes the concentrate against crystallization and/or freezing at sub-freezing conditions, particularly when the isothiazolinone compound has a melting point of 30.degree. C. or above. 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether also enhances the anti-microbial properties of an isothiazolinone-containing concentrate.

Provided are microbiocidal solutions comprising an aryl alkanol solvent, a microbiocidal compound dissolved therein and a polymer processing aid. The solutions may be used to impart microbiocidal properties to polymer compositions.

For providing biocides in concentrated, immobilized form to an end use resin composition containing a primary thermoplastic resin with which the primary resin is incompatible at high concentrations, solid biocide resin concentrates are provided which immobilize high concentrations of biocide. The solid biocide resin concentrates may contain an alloy of two thermoplastic resins, one of which is substantially identical to the primary resin and one of which enables incorporation and immobilization of high concentrations of biocide in the solid biocide resin concentrates. The solid biocide resin concentrate may contain, in whole or in part, a thermoplastic copolymer having mer units such as are present in the primary resin in addition to dissimilar mer units which enhance compatibility of the biocide with the copolymer. OBPA-containing solid resin concentrates for adding to an end use resin composition in which polyethylene is the primary resin may contain polyethylene plus a second thermoplastic resin in which OBPA is generally compatible and/or a copolymer containing both ethylene and acrylic acid mer units and/or a terpolymer containing ethylene, vinyl acetate and carbon monoxide mer units. Ethylene/acrylic copolymers and ethylene/vinyl acetate/carbon monoxide terpolymers are each useful for forming solid biocide resin concentrates that are miscible with a wide variety of thermoplastic resins.

Resin-immobilized biocides

Solutions of microbiocides in cosolvents having alkanol moieties and concentrate compositions of carriers, microbiocides and cosolvents having alkanol moieties are stabilized against UV-catalyzed oxidation by the addition of phenolic antioxidants. The solutions or concentrate compositions are added to polymeric resins and formed, e.g., by fusion, into polymer compositions exhibiting microbiocidal properties.
