A method and system for modeling an inflatable supplemental restraint device for a vehicle includes operating a simulation system according to a first step in which the restraint device is modeled in a fully inflated configuration using a finite element model. The modeled airbag is then deflated and flattened. The flattened airbag is subjected to simulated folding using a finite element model. Inputs drawn from the results of successive portions of the simulation are used in the later modeling steps.

Vehicular supplemental restraint device simulation using finite element modeling

A deployable running board mounted on an automotive vehicle to be laterally extendable so as to engage the ground during a rollover event to increase the rollover resistance of the vehicle. The running boards are connected to a pair of deployment members spaced longitudinally on the vehicle to provide a rapid extension of the running board. Each deployment member includes a telescopic piston that is slidably mounted within a cylinder and that compresses a spring between the piston and the cylinder. A latching mechanism secures the piston in a retracted stated until a rollover event is detected. Releasing the latching mechanism allows the piston to telescope laterally to move the attached running board outwardly of the vehicle to provide a pivot point that increases the static stability factor of the vehicle. The engagement of the extended running board also provides a resistance to the continued motion of the vehicle.

A side impact airbag system is disclosed that is stored behind cover panels provided on the A-hinge pillar, rocker, and C-body lock pillar. The airbag is stored in a receptacle until it is inflated by an inflator. The inflator inflates the airbag that is connected between fore-and-aft spaced anchoring points. When the airbag is in a deployed position, it is located between a seat and door of the vehicle. The deployment height of the airbag is controlled by tethering side shield panels that are secured between the airbag and the vehicle. The tethering side shield panels are not inflated by the inflator but are pulled to a taut condition as a result of the deployment of the airbag.

An extendible rail and bumper apparatus is mountable within the base frame lower rails of an automotive frame to provide an improved crash force absorbing bumper apparatus for deployment on either the front or rear bumpers of an automobile. The extendible rail member is mounted for telescopic movement through slidable guide members. A front plate is formed with wedge members positioned next to the extendible rail member. The actuation mechanism includes an electric motor that rotates a threaded rod having a conical member mounted thereon for translational movement thereon. The conical member engages a pair of outwardly projectable tabs that are driven outwardly into engagement with the wedge members when the extendible rail is fully extended. If required to absorb impact energy, the outwardly projected tabs push the wedge members into engagement with the front plate to transfer the energy into the base frame rail apparatus of the vehicle.

A grab handle assembly for an interior of a motor vehicle includes a headliner disposed in the interior of the vehicle for mounting to a vehicle body of the motor vehicle. The headliner has a recess. The grab handle assembly also includes a grab handle disposed in the recess and spaced from the vehicle body to absorb energy when impacted.

A motor vehicle occupant protection system features an upper panel of an armrest is maintained in an arm supporting position during normal vehicle operation, and is moved to a safety position by an actuation device upon sensing of an actual or impending impact on the side of the vehicle. In the arm supporting position, the arm support panel contributes to the structural strength of the armrest so that it is able to withstand rugged use. In the safety position, the arm support panel is positioned so that it does not present a rigid edge oriented directly toward the occupant, but rather is in a partially or completely folded position. Both mechanical and electronic actuation systems are disclosed.

Active armrest for side impact protection

A seat belt anchor assembly is provided for use in an automotive vehicle wherein the vehicle includes an occupant compartment having a side pillar forming a structural part of a vehicle body. The seat belt anchor assembly includes an anchor bolt fixedly secured to the side pillar and having a shank portion defining a bolt axis and a head portion including an outer cylindrical surface extending axially from the shank portion to an annular face facing toward an interior of the occupant compartment. The seat belt anchor assembly further includes a seat belt sling member supported by the shank portion for receiving a seat belt webbing forming an anchor point along the side pillar. The seat belt anchor assembly also includes a trim panel adapted to be secured to the side pillar for covering the anchor bolt and having an energy absorbing member extending axially between the trim panel and the head portion of the anchor bolt. The energy absorbing member includes a tubular member supported between the support ribs and spaced axially from the trim panel for encapsulating the head portion of the anchor bolt and a planar shelf closing an end of the tubular member adjacent the trim panel for contacting the annular face of the head portion to dissipate energy through the energy absorbing member in response to impact forces acting upon the trim panel through the interior of the occupant compartment.

Seat belt anchor assembly

An energy absorbing trim assembly 16 for covering an inner face of structural member 28 of a vehicle defining a passenger compartment having elongated wall portion 18 with a longitudinal axis. Wall portion 18 positionable in a covering relationship over structural member inner face 28. A plurality of swept arch members 20 are arrayed along longitudinal axis 19 in a laterally spaced relationship with respect to structural member inner face 28. Arch members 20 are elastically deformable in response to imposition of a load substantially normal to the structural member inner face 28 and plastically deformable upon contact with structural member inner face 28 to further distribute the load. Energy absorbing pedestal members 22,22' provide for the mounting of energy absorbing trim assembly 16 to a structural member inner face 28. Pedestals 22,22' are plastically deformable in response to imposition of a load substantially normal to a structural member 12. Pedestals 22,22' act in combination with swept arch members 20 to further reduce the magnitude of acceleration and thereby aid in protection of vehicle occupants.
