This invention discloses an improved process which employs mixed alpha-olefins as feed over activated metallocene catalyst systems to provide essentially random liquid polymers particularly useful in lubricant components or as functional fluids.

The invention is directed to a process for the preparation of high viscosity lubricant base stocks by contacting alphaolefin feedstocks with single-site metallocene catalysts in a mixed flow or continuous stirred tank reactors.

Production of shear-stable high viscosity PAO

A process for the preparation of oligomeric poly alpha-olefins includes oligomerizing low molecular weight PAO oligomer in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst such as promoted aluminum trichloride or boron trifluoride under oligomerization conditions. The low molecular weight PAO oligomers used as a feed or feed component of the present process are the light olefinic by-product fractions including the dimers and light fractions from the metallocene-catalyzed PAO oligomerization process which are characterized by a molecular weight of 150 to 600 and a terminal olefin (vinylidene) content of at least 25%.

Process for synthetic lubricant production

This invention relates to a polyalpha-olefin (and hydrogenated analogs thereof) comprising more than 50 mole % of one or more C5 to C24 alpha-olefin monomers where the polyalpha-olefin has: a) 40 mole % or more of mm triads, b) a Bromine number of Y or greater, where Y is equal to 89.92*(V)'&#xb0;5863, where V is the Kinematic Viscosity of the polyalpha-olefin measured at 100&#xb0; C. in cSt, and c) 1,2 disubstituted olefins present at 7 mole % or more, preferably having Z mole % or more of units represented by the formula: where j, k and m are each, independently, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, or 22, n is an integer from 1 to 350, and where Z=8.420*Log(V)&#x2212;4.048, where V is the kinematic viscosity of the polyalpha-olefin measured at 1000 C in cSt This invention also relates to process to produce such polyalpha-olefins. 

Polyalpha-olefin compositions and processes to produce the same

The present invention relates to poly alpha-olefins (PAO's) which exhibit superior Noack volatility at low pour points. The poly alpha-olefin is prepared from an olefin feed comprised of a blend of octene, decene, and dodecene, the feed comprising at least 10 weight % octene and at least 30 weight % dodecene. The process includes both synthesis and distillation of the olefin and oligomerization olefin. The oligomerized olefin feed yields at least 50% low viscosity PAO having a nominal viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of about 4 cSt.

Manufacture of low viscosity poly alpha-olefins

Liquid poly-alpha-olefins having a KVof 2 to 6000 cSt, 20 weight percent dimer or less and a viscosity index of 60 or more are obtained by contacting in a reaction zone, in the presence of from 0 to 60 psi hydrogen, C3 to C20 alpha-olefin monomers with a non-coordinating anion activator, a single bridged meso-metallocene transition metal compound having less than about 35 wt % racemic isomer, and a co-activator. The molar ratio of activator to meso-metallocene is from 10:1 to 0.1:1, and the alpha-olefin monomers in the feed components are present in at least 20 wt % or more based upon the weight of the meso-metallocene, non-coordinating anion activator, co-activator, monomers, and solvent or diluent. The productivity of the process is at least 50,000 g of total product per gram of transition metal compound and no more than 5% monomer is converted from olefin to alkane.

Process to produce polyalphaolefins

The invention relates to industrial lubricant and grease compositions containing high viscosity index polyalphaolefins (HVI-PAO). The use of HVI-PAOs in industrial oils and greases application provides advantages in improved shear stability, wear property, foam property, energy efficiency and improved overall performance.

Catalyst recovery process

The invention relates to a method of making a PAO characterized by a low viscosity, low Noack volatility, and excellent cold temperature properties, using a promoter system comprising an alcohol and an ester. The products comprise trimers obtained by fractionating a hydrogenated bottoms product from an oligomerization process using said promoter system.
