A non-gelatin encapsulation system for liquid filled soft capsules, by nature of the carrier, the cationic-ionic balance of the carrier and the active ingredients, or the concentration of the active ingredients and excipients, are difficult or impossible to commercially encapsulate in gelatin capsules. In particular, the system is adapted for the encapsulation of highly basic, or alkaline, fills. The system provides for a predominantly starch and gelling carrageenan based shell, which displays high resistance to both concentrated fills and to alkaline fills, in particular, to those fills which contain the salt or salts of weak acids and strong bases.

Non-gelatin soft capsule system

This invention relates to a method and apparatus for forming soft capsules and provides novel processing flexibility. The apparatus includes extrusion dies as an alternative to spreader boxes and the use of melt-on-demand technology to enhance the long term stability of the film-forming materials. Preferred embodiments provide a positive displacement pump to transport the molten film-forming material from the melt-on-demand device to the extrusion device and preferably a reservoir means disposed between said extrusion device and said means to melt said film-forming material. The encapsulation apparatus may also include a valved injection wedge.

Methods for preparing soft gelatin capsules containing fragrances are disclosed. The desired fragrance is dissolved in a solvent system comprising a volatile solvent, a non-volatile cosolvent, or a combination of a volatile solvent and a non-volatile cosolvent or cosolvents. The resulting mixture is then encapsulated between gelatin ribbions prepared with an odor-free gelatin plasticized with a partially dehydrated, hydrogenated glucose syrup.

Fragrances in soft gelatin capsules are disclosed. The desired fragrance is dissolved in a solvent system comprising a volatile solvent, a non-volatile cosolvent, or a combination of a volatile solvent and a non-volatile cosolvent or cosolvents. The resulting solution is then encapsulated by soft gelatin shell prepared with an odor-free, glycerol free gelatin plasticized with a partially dehydrated, hydrogenated glucose syrup.

Fragrance-containing cosmetic gelatin capsule

A gelatin capsule that is generally resistant to humidity having a non-hygroscopic plasticizer and an elasticity reducing gelatin extender in the formulation of the gelatin capsule shell. The capsule is capable of being manufactured on conventional rotary die encapsulation devices and can readily hold liquid fill materials. The capsule is breakable with manual pressure.

Capsule shell formulation to produce brittle capsules

Knurled surfaces such as raised ribs are provided on the shell of a soft gelatin capsule in order to enhance gripping and manipulation of the capsule. The capsule has a removable tab at one end thereof which may also be provided with a knurled surface. One embodiment of the invention is a capsule used for delivery of medicaments to an external body surface. An alternative embodiment of the capsule is disclosed for insertion into a body orifice. The composition of the capsule includes a starch or starch derivative which gives the capsule a drier feel and increases the coefficient of friction of the surface of the shell, further improving the capsule's handling characteristics.
