A high pressure discharge lamp includes a pair of arc tubes connected electrically in parallel within an outer envelope, which includes a lamp stem having a pair of stem conductors entering the lamp envelope in a common plane. The arc tubes include conductive feed-throughs at each end thereof. A lamp frame supports the arc tubes in a plane parallel with the stem conductors and is welded directly to each of the feed-throughs with all welds in a common plane with the welds between the frame and the stem conductors. The frame includes a resiliently deformable transverse member which allows for independent changes in length of the arc tubes during lamp operation due to thermal expansion/contraction. The frame is free of slip fit connections with the feed-throughs and free of additional conductive straps connected to the feed-throughs.

Dual arc tube discharge lamp having a lamp frame with coplanar spot

An electric lamp having a light source capsule with a generally planar press seal, having two opposing major faces and two minor faces extending therebetween, includes an improved support strap for securing the seal to a frame support rod. The support strap includes a stiffly resilient strip of metal having two spaced and opposing major leg portions each extending in contact with a respective major seal face, an elastically deformable jaw portion substantially not in contact with a seal face, and end portions fixed to each other adjacent one of the seal faces. The elastically deformable portion is arranged such that with the strap end portions fixed to each other it is elastically deformed and firmly biases other portions of the support strap against at least two of the seal faces for holding the seal therebetween. The elastically deformable portion is dimensioned such that the seal is firmly held by the strap despite the usual lamp-to-lamp variations in seal dimensions which occur during high speed lamp manufacture, obviating the need for hand fitting or expensive and complicated strap fitting equipment.

Electric lamp having improved support straps for planar seals

A high pressure lamp assembly having an improved structure for supporting the discharge tube while providing an opening bi-metallic switch for electrically disconnecting the auxiliary electrode. Metallic frames are disposed at the upper and lower ends of the discharge lamp to provide at least partial support to the discharge tube. A non-conductive bridge assembly is connected between the lead through of the auxiliary electrode and a conductive rod extending from the stem. The non-conductive bridge provides at least partial mechanical support to the discharge tube. Connected across the non-conductive bridge is the starting resistor and bi-metallic switch element. When the bi-metallic element is unheated, it provides electrical connection through the starting resistor to the auxiliary electrode. When heated by the heat from the discharge tube, the bi-metallic switch moves out of engagement with the ceramic bridge and thus breaks the electrical connection to the auxiliary electrode.

A high intensity discharge lamp having a pair of discharge devices with one of them initially operative. The discharge devices are laterally adjacent with the higher temperature end of the operative discharge device proximate the lower temperature end of the inoperative discharge device for heating it during lamp operation. This facilitates starting of the inoperative discharge device after a momentary power interruption.

HID lamp with multiple discharge devices

A high pressure discharge lamp arrangement in which the support wire for the arc tube of the lamp has its end which is inserted in the open tubular electrode structure of the lamp expanded so that its external dimension more nearly equals the internal dimension of the tubular structure.

Arc tube wire support

A high intensity arc discharge lamp having an elongated outer vitreous envelope sealed by a dome at its upper end and a base assembly at is lower end. An elongated arc discharge tube within the envelope is supported at its lower end by the base assembly and at its upper end by a supporting frame, the lower end of the supporting frame also being supported by the base assembly. To stabilize the upper end of the supporting frame against movement with respect to the outer envelope, a curvilinear flat retaining spring is affixed at one end to the upper end of the supporting frame, the other end of the retaining spring being in free cantilevered compression contact with the dome of the envelope.

Arc discharge lamp

A high pressure discharge lamp having a wire connected to at least one of the electrode assemblies of its arc tube. The wire is formed with two separated legs joined at a common point. The legs are both bent toward the common point. The distance between the legs of the wire contracts and expands to compensate for the expansion and contraction of the lamp's arc tube as the lamp is turned on and off.

A method of forming a support wire for the arc tube of a discharge lamp wherein a cut end of the support wire is flattened to provide a smooth burr-free surface for insertion into the opening of the niobium tubes located at the ends of the arc tube of the discharge lamp.

A high pressure discharge lamp with a multi-bent wire frame which provides symmetrical orientation and improved structural support for a pair of discharge devices which are supported at their tops by an element which allows for differential expansion of the devices.
