A toner recording medium including a substrate, such as paper, containing a coating composition of particulate silica and a polyvinyl alcohol in a coating weight of less than 2.0 g/m.sup.2 per side of the substrate. The composition is preferably about 50 to less than 90 parts by dry weight of particulate silica and about 10 to 50 parts by dry weight binder. A carbonless copying system which enables the formation of images that are capable of being detected by an optical character recognition (OCR) device. A phenolic resin or reactive clay image-forming component is applied as a CF coating on a recording substrate. A first complementary image-forming component which is a microencapsulated dye precursor that is capable of forming a colored image when contacting the CF coating is applied as a CB coating to a transfer substrate. A second complementary image-forming component, which is a microencapsulated dye precursor capable of forming a colored image when contacting the CF coating that is detectable by an OCR device, is applied as a CB coating to selected portions of the transfer substrate. The dye precursor capsules, upon rupture by application of pressure, release the dye precursor which contacts and reacts with the phenolic resin or reactive clay to form colored images, with those images formed from second complementary image-forming component being capable of detection by an OCR device. The carbonless copying system of the invention is particularly useful in credit card sales slip applications.

OCR scannable carbonless copying system and a method of producing OCR

A carbonless copy system which enables the formation of a plurality of different colored images on a substrate. A phenolic resin or reactive clay image-forming component is applied as a CF coating on a recording substrate. One or more coatings of encapsulated dye precursors (complementary image-forming components) are applied to selected portions of the CF coating on the recording substrate and one or more coatings of encapsulated dye precursors are applied to selected portions of a transfer substrate. The dye precursor coatings are capable of forming different colored reaction products when coming into contact and reacting with the phenolic resin or reactive clay. Upon applying pressure to the transfer substrate, the dye precursor capsules are ruptured, releasing the dye precursor which contacts and reacts with the phenolic resin or reactive clay to form the colored reaction products.

A set of carbonless recording sheets wherein each of the individual sheets of the set may be separately stacked with sheets which are identical thereto without the danger of offsetting or inadvertent reproduction occurring through that stack. The sheets become operative only when assembled into the manifolded set. The central, intermediate sheets of the manifolded set are each coated front and back with respective chemicals which are incapable of reacting with one another to produce a color. The set includes at least two different types of intermediate sheets, one of which has a front coating capable of reacting with the back coating of the other to produce a color and vice versa. Generally, the manifolded set will include a top sheet which has a back coating only, one or more intermediate sheets which have a front coating capable of reacting with the back coating of the next adjacent higher sheet to produce a color and a back coating which is capable of reacting with the front coating on the next adjacent lower sheet to produce a color, and a bottom sheet having a front coating which is reactive with the back coating of the next adjacent higher intermediate sheet to produce a color.
