The disclosure describes a pressure vessel having a first end with a first boss and a cylindrical portion. The vessel includes a liner, a composite shell disposed over the liner, and a first longitudinal vent disposed between the liner and the composite shell. The first longitudinal vent includes an elongated vent defining element and extends at least from the cylindrical portion of the vessel to the first boss.

A system includes a source of pressurized fluid, a primary pressure vessel disposed in fluid communication with the source, and a supplemental pressure vessel disposed in fluid communication with the source and in fluid communication with the primary pressure vessel. The primary pressure vessel has a first life expectancy duration and includes a first structural characteristic. The supplemental pressure vessel has a second life expectancy duration shorter than the first life expectancy duration and includes a second structural characteristic. A method uses a supplemental pressure vessel to predict impending failure of a primary pressure vessel. The method includes connecting a primary pressure vessel to a source of pressurized fluid, fluidly connecting a supplemental pressure vessel with the source and with the primary pressure vessel, and exposing the supplemental pressure vessel to a first fatigue load to cause its failure before failure of the primary pressure vessel occurs.

A pressure vessel has a first end with a first boss, the first boss having a first outer surface. The vessel includes a liner having a second outer surface, a shell disposed over the second outer surface, and a first vent. The first vent is formed onto at least a portion of the first outer surface and at least a portion of the second outer surface. The first vent includes a texture that provides a higher rate of gas flow through the first vent than through a portion of an interface of the liner and shell lacking the texture. In another aspect, a pressure vessel has a first end and a second end, a plurality of first longitudinal vents and a plurality of second longitudinal vents. At least one of first longitudinal vents is circumferentially offset around the pressure vessel from at least one of the second longitudinal vents.

A pressure vessel includes a shell, a liner, and a boss. The liner is positioned within the shell and defines the interior environment. The boss is located at a first interface between the shell and the liner. The boss includes a cavity and a venting structure located in the cavity. The cavity is located at a second interface between the liner and the boss, and the cavity is located at an interior surface of the boss in communication with the interior environment. A gas vent path is defined from the first interface, through the venting structure, and into the interior environment of the pressure vessel. The disclosure also describes a boss for a pressure vessel and a method of manufacturing the boss. The boss includes a port, a flange, a cavity and a gas venting structure. The cavity and gas venting structure are located on an interior of the flange.

An apparatus comprises a plurality of substantially cylindrical pressure vessel structures. Each cylindrical pressure vessel structure has first and second opposite ends. A first cap is positioned at the first ends of the plurality of cylindrical pressure vessel structures. The first cap includes a first dome-shaped protrusion that corresponds to each of the first ends. A first saddle is defined between adjacent first dome-shaped protrusions. A second cap is positioned at the second ends of the plurality of cylindrical pressure vessel structures. The second cap includes a second dome-shaped protrusion that corresponds to each of the second ends. A second saddle is defined between adjacent second dome-shaped protrusions. A reinforcement structure extends around the first and second caps, and is disposed within one of the first saddles and one of the second saddles.

A pressure vessel includes a main body section and an end section. The end section includes a boss and the boss includes a flange. The flange includes an interior keyway having an inner sidewall and a plurality of bores disposed on the inner sidewall. In another aspect, a pressure vessel includes an outer shell, and inner liner and a boss including a flange with an exterior side and an interior side. The liner is mechanically integrated with the flange via a plurality of anchors, each anchor contacting the flange only on the interior side. A method of forming a pressure vessel includes providing a boss having a flange. The flange has an interior keyway having an inner sidewall and a plurality of bores disposed on the inner sidewall. The method comprises allowing a fluid polymer material to flow into the interior keyway and into the plurality of bores.

A non-cylindrical pressure vessel storage tank is disclosed. The storage tank includes an internal structure. The internal structure is coupled to at least one wall of the storage tank. The internal structure shapes and internally supports the storage tank. The pressure vessel storage tank has a conformability of about 0.8 to about 1.0. The internal structure can be, but is not limited to, a Schwarz-P structure, an egg-crate shaped structure, or carbon fiber ligament structure.

Structures for securing a fluid containment cylinder at the neck portion of the cylinder include a mounting frame having a bore disposed therein and a slot disposed orthogonally to the central axis of the bore. The neck of the cylinder passes through the bore and a u-bolt passes through the slot, registering against a shoulder on the neck of the cylinder, thereby securing the cylinder within the block. In other embodiments, the securing structure includes a collar for preventing rotation of the cylinder or for accommodating a certain degree of misalignment of the cylinder with respect to the securement structure.

Method and apparatus for mounting a fluid containment cylinder

A pressure vessel is disclosed for holding fluids. The vessel includes a generally cylindrical outer shell fabricated of a substantially rigid, mechanically strong material, and having a generally hemispherical end section with an opening therein. An inner, generally fluid impervious flexible liner is disposed in the outer shell against the inside surface thereof. The liner has a generally hemispherical end section with an opening aligned with the opening in the outer shell. A boss has a neck portion for fitting in the opening in the outer shell. A generally hemispherical extension projects radially outwardly of the boss substantially entirely to the cylindrical configuration of the outer shell against the inside surface of the inner liner to prevent the generally hemispherical end section of the liner from pulling away from the outer shell.

Pressure vessel with system to prevent liner separation

A boss is disposed in a polar opening in a pressure vessel which has a filament wound outer shell and a non-metallic internal liner. The boss has a tubular neck which projects outwardly from the vessel interior and an annular support flange which extends radially from the internal end of the neck and supports the perimeter of the polar opening. An offset attachment flange extends radially from the support flange and has two axially opposed surfaces with locking grooves formed therein. Each locking groove has a bottom wall intermediate a pair of mutually skewed sidewalls for maintaining positive engagement with and retention of complementary respective tabs on the liner. In an application where the liner is a blow molded component, an injection molded interface member is attached to the support flange and provides a site at which the liner is welded.
