The invention is a process for making novel branched polybenzazole polymers and the polymers formed thereby. Novel compounds are also disclosed that are useful as branching agents in making the branched polybenzazole polymers. The branched polymers synthesized by the process can be formed into strong, light articles such as fibers and films.

A method of inhibiting microbial growth by employing an addition copolymer is disclosed. The addition copolymer consists essentially of an olefin and sulfur dioxide; said olefin containing at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chloride, and fluoride radicals. These compositions inhibit bacterial growth while functioning as plastic materials and can be used in coatings, packaging, paints, structural members and supports.

Polyoxazolines, such as poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline, having a weight average molecular weight in the range of from about 1,000 to about 150,000, are effective as dispersing agents for particulate matter found in starch/clay coatings and protein/latex clay coatings for paper. Usually, 0.005 percent to about 2.0 percent polyoxazoline, based on the total weight of the binder, effectively reduces the viscosity of said paper coatings, allowing the use of higher solids in the coating composition.

Novel polymers are described herein which are particularly useful in removing phenolics from waste streams. The polymers are prepared by reacting an oxazoline or oxazine (preferably 2-methyl or ethyl-2-oxazoline) with a cross-linked vinylaromatic polymer bearing pendant halomethyl groups on the aromatic rings. Macroporous beads prepared by reacting cross-linked chloromethylated polystyrene with 2-methyl and/or 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline are particularly useful embodiments in removing phenolics from aqueous waste streams and are used to remove phenolics (e.g. tannins) and other color-bodies from bleached Kraft pulp effluent.
