A plurality of radially arcuate slip segments supported in a bowl are interlocked together by tongues which extend radially from the axially extending sides of the segments and mate with slots in the axially extending sides of adjacent segments to prevent axial displacement of the slip segments with respect to each other.

Self-aligning gripping assembly

Foreign particles are removed from the plate cylinder of an offset press by interconnecting two ink form rollers friction driven by the plate roller and/or a vibrating roller to rotate in unison at different surface velocities. The connection between the form rollers maintains a fixed ratio between the surface velocities of the rollers which is other than 1:1 and causes the surface of at least one of the form rollers to wipe the surface of the plate.

Hickey removal system

A paper guide wheel for printing presses is formed to include an outer surface eccentric with respect to the axis of rotation of the wheel so as to form an air gap between the outer surface of the wheel and the paper as the paper is drawn thereover during movement through the press. The air gap gradually narrows as the wheel turns, allowing the freshly inked surface of the paper to gently nest against the outer surface at a point removed from the leading edge of the paper. The outer surface has a slightly convex contour in the axial direction to avoid marking of the paper by contact with the axial extremes of the outer surface. Foam material may be provided on the wheel rim to assist in supporting the paper without marking the freshly inked image.

Paper guide wheel

An apparatus and method for oscillating the ink form rollers and dampening form roller in a lithographic printing press to apply a smooth, relatively uniform coating of ink to the ink-receptive areas of the lithographic printing plate and to prevent ink from being transferred from the dampening form roller to the ink-rejecting areas of the printing plate. The ink form rollers and the dampening form roller are each mounted on a shaft rotatable about its own axis. The shaft has at least one shaft key for mating with a complementary keyway in a bushing which is inserted at least partially into the central opening of the corresponding roller. The engagement between the shaft key and the bushing keyway allows the roller and bushing to engage the shaft for common rotation while permitting the roller and bushing to slide axially with resepct to the shaft. First and second collar members may be disposed at respective predetermined locations on the corresponding shaft for limiting the axial movement of the corresponding roller between selected limits, although both the ink form rollers and the dampening form roller are preferably allowed to oscillate axially substantially the same distance in each direction as the corresponding vibrating roller by which the oscillating motion is imparted thereto.

Apparatus and method for oscillating the form rollers in a printing press

Disclosed are methods and apparatus for controllably locking a shaft to a bearing surface moveable thereupon to permit or prevent axial movement of the bearing with respect to the shaft. In one embodiment an axially extending flap is formed in the shaft which is activated by a wedge to expand the diameter of the shaft and thereby lock the shaft to the surrounding bearing surface. In another embodiment a slot is formed in the bushing surrounding the shaft and the internal diameter of the bushing decreased with a wedge screw to lock the bushing to the shaft.
