An ignition coil assembly adapted to be mounted directly in a plug hole of an internal combustion engine. The coil assembly includes a primary coil and a secondary coil. The spool upon which the secondary coil is wound is cylindrical in shape and has ramp structures provided at each end thereof. The ramps decrease voltage concentration between the secondary and primary windings, decrease the voltage gradient along the end wall of the secondary spool, and minimize adverse effects of gaps created during thermal expansion/contraction.

A system and method of providing multicharge ignition are provided. The method and system preferably are adapted to trigger at least some of the multicharge events of the system and method in a current-dependent manner. Preferably, existing power train control units (PTCUs) can be used with the system and method, without the need for signals other than the timing signal (e.g., EST pulse) from the PTCU. The method comprises the steps of charging an inductive energy storage device by flowing electrical current through a primary side of the inductive energy storage device until a predetermined amount of energy is stored therein, discharging a portion of the predetermined amount of energy through a secondary side of the inductive energy storage device by opening a path of the electrical current through the primary side upon achieving the predetermined amount of energy in the inductive energy storage device, and repetitively closing and reopening the path to recharge and partially discharge, respectively, the inductive energy storage device, wherein reopening of the path is triggered based on the amount of energy stored in the inductive energy storage device. The multicharge ignition system comprises an inductive energy storage device and electronic ignition circuitry. The inductive energy storage device has primary and secondary sides inductively coupled to one another. The electronic ignition circuitry is connected to the primary side and is adapted to implement the aforementioned method.

System and method for providing multicharge ignition

Ignition drive circuitry for generating sequential first and second arcs across electrodes of spark plugs in internal combustion engine cylinders for contributing supplemental combustion energy and for enabling simple, robust misfire detection with a first arc generated through rapid discharge of a storage element and the second arc generated through interruption of said discharge through a transformer primary ignition coil.

Double strike ignition control

A self-diagnosing ignition drive circuit for applying a first ignition drive signal to a spark plug in an internal combustion engine cylinder for generating an arc across the electrodes thereof to ignite an air/fuel mixture in the cylinder and, following a delay period, applying a second ignition drive signal to the spark plug for generating a second arc across the electrodes to contribute combustion energy and to provide for measurement of the frequency content of energy trapped in an ignition coil during combustion. If the frequency content includes a predetermined frequency, improper ignition in the cylinder is diagnosed through excitation of a natural frequency of a misfire detection circuit coupled to the ignition coil corresponding to at least one engine cylinder.

Self diagnosing ignition control

The present invention is directed to an electrical circuit for detecting the presence of combustion within a catalytic converter preheater. Combustion of an air/fuel mixture within the preheater results in a wide-band high voltage RF signal across a spark plug gap disposed within the preheater, which is trapped by an ignition coil coupled to the spark plug for energizing the spark plug gap. The presence of combustion will effectuate an elimination or absorption of one or more specific frequencies within the RF voltage band. By coupling a combustion detection circuit comprising an inductor-capacitor (L-C) or resistor-inductor-capacitor (R-L-C) network between ground and a low voltage output terminal of a secondary winding of the ignition coil, and properly tuning the network components to one of the specific absorption frequencies, an output voltage of the combustion detection circuit during discharge of the spark plug will be responsive to the absence or presence of combustion in the burner. The output voltage is characterized by (i) a high voltage spike in the absence of combustion during discharge of the spark plug, and (ii) a low voltage spike in the presence of combustion during discharge of the spark plug. A comparator means compares the output voltage with a predetermined threshold voltage and generates a binary high voltage pulse upon the occurrence of a misfire.

Combustion detection circuit for a catalytic converter preheater

A distributorless ignition system for an internal combustion engine which discharges only one spark plug at a time. A high-level reversible voltage potential in selectively induced in the secondary winding of an ignition coil. Opposing diodes connected to the secondary winding permit application of the induced voltage across only one of two spark plug gaps, the central electrode of the spark plug being negatively charged with respect to ground to effectuate discharge with reduced power requirements and electrode erosion.
