A compressor may include a shell, first and second scroll members, and a first annular seal. The first scroll member may be supported within the shell and may include a first end plate having a first spiral wrap extending from a first surface thereof and a second surface having an annular groove therein. The annular groove may include a first portion having a first depth and a second portion disposed radially inwardly relative to the first portion and having a second depth that is less than the first depth. The second scroll member may be supported within the shell and may include a second end plate having a second spiral wrap extending therefrom and meshingly engaged with the first spiral wrap. The first annular seal may be positioned within the annular groove.

Dual volume-ratio scroll machine

The present invention provides the art with a scroll machine which has a plurality of built-in volume ratios along with their respective design pressure ratios. The incorporation of more than one built-in volume ratio allows a single compressor to be optimized for more than one operating condition. The operating envelope for the compressor will determine which of the various built-in volume ratios is going to be selected. Each volume ratio includes a discharge passage extending between one of the pockets of the scroll machine and the discharge chamber. All but the highest volume ration utilize a valve controlling the flow through the discharge passage.

A compressor assembly includes a shell which defines a discharge chamber. A discharge valve assembly is attached to the shell in communication with the discharge chamber. The discharge valve assembly includes a stamped or coined valve seat, a drawn tubular element and a stamped valve member. The stamping, drawing and coining operations used to manufacture the discharge valve assembly significantly reduce the manufacturing costs for the discharge valve assembly.

Discharge valve

A scroll machine has a fluid path which is defined by two components of the scroll machine. The fluid path extends between a discharge pressure zone and a suction pressure zone of the scroll machine. The scroll machine further includes a biasing member which biases one of the two components away from the other of the two components to open the fluid path when the scroll machine is not operating. The effect of the biasing member is overcome by several revolutions of the scroll machine by centrifugal force in one embodiment and fluid pressure in another embodiment.

A scroll compressor includes a hermetic shell which has a partition defining a discharge pressure chamber and a suction pressure chamber within the shell. The partition includes a surface which pilots the non-orbiting scroll to allow for limited axial movement of the non-orbiting scroll. Rotational motion of the non-orbiting scroll is prohibited by a stationary pin which extends from the partition to engage an extension of the slot which is utilized by the Oldham coupling.

A scroll machine has an intermediate pressure cavity which is operable to open and close a leakage path between the discharge zone and the suction zone of the scroll machine. The leakage path is closed when intermediate pressurized fluid is supplied to the cavity and the leakage path is open when the cavity is open to the suction zone of the compressor. A valve (102) which can be mechanical or electrical is used to open and close a passageway extending between the cavity and the suction zone of the machine. A high pressure relief valve is incorporated into the design of the compressor to prevent slugging. The high pressure relief valve will release the intermediate pressurized fluid to suction and/or discharge when the pressure within the intermediate pressure cavity exceeds a predetermined value.

A scroll machine has an intermediate pressure cavity which is operable to open and close a leakage path between the discharge zone and the suction zone of the scroll machine. The leakage path is closed when intermediate pressurized fluid is supplied to the cavity and the leakage path is open when the cavity is open to the suction zone of the compressor. A valve which can be mechanical or electrical is used to open and close a passageway extending between the cavity and the suction zone of the machine. Biasing means is located within the scroll machine in order to control the rate at which the intermediate pressurized fluid is bled to the suction zone of the compressor.

A scroll machine has an intermediate pressure cavity which is operable to open and close a leakage path between the discharge zone and the suction zone of the scroll machine. The leakage path is closed when intermediate pressurized fluid is supplied to the cavity and the leakage path is open when the cavity is open to the suction zone of the compressor. A valve which can be mechanical or electrical is used to open and close a passageway extending between the cavity and the suction zone of the machine.

The disclosure describes a scroll compressor which incorporates a spring biased floating seal to facilitate the start-up for the compressor. The spring biased floating seal opens a discharge to suction leakage path before and during start-up for the compressor. After a few revolutions of the scrolls of the compressor the floating seal is biased against the load of the spring to close the leakage path due to pressurized working fluid of the compressor working against the biasing of the springs.

Disclosed are several embodiments of a stopping device operable between the drive shaft and/or orbiting scroll of a scroll compressor and a fixed wall forming part of the compressor, for the purposes of automatically engaging the wall upon reverse operation of the compressor to thereby quickly stop such reverse operation. Damage to the compressor in the event of powered reverse is also prevented, either by permitting the machine to run free or by quickly stopping it. Also disclosed are several ways to facilitate start-up with weak motors.

A hermetically sealed compressor has a fan for cooling the motor of the compressor. The compressor utilizes the refrigerant vapor inside the hermetic shell to cool the motor. The fan is attached to the end of the motor rotor and crankshaft to circulate the suction gas of the compressor around and through the motor rotor and motor stator to absorb heat and then directs the suction gas against the hermetic shell in a spiralling motion for transferring heat to the shell which in turn transfers heat to the atmosphere.
