A vehicle drive speed control system is provided for a vehicle having driven rear wheels, driven steerable front wheels, a powertrain for driving the front and rear wheels at controllable speeds. A control unit controls the powertain so that a front/rear wheel speed ratio is a non-linear trigonometric function of a sensed steering angle signal. The front/rear wheel speed ratio increases as the steering angle increases. The relationship of the front/rear wheel speed ratio to the steering angle is represented by a curve which is concave in a direction of an axis of increasing speed ratio. With a mode select switch, an operator can selectively cause the control unit to control the front/rear speed ratio according to a first normal or a second more aggressive predefined relationship.

Steering responsive wheel drive system

A suspended drive axle and agricultural tractor having same including a central housing having inboard final drives and left and right axle housing suspended therefrom by upper and lower control arms with axle shafts extending outwardly therefrom to which wheel and tire assemblies are mounted. A constant velocity universal joint is provided between the inboard final drives and the axle shafts. The universal joint having a pair of journal members and a coupling yoke that radially surround the drive and driven yokes of the joint whereby the axial length of the universal joint is minimized to enable the wheels to be located on the axle shafts at 60 inch tread spacing. This allows the drive axle to be used on a row crop tractor without altering the structure of the vehicle from a conventional row crop tractor whereby the characteristics of a row crop tractor are maintained.

Suspended drive axle and agricultural tractor with same

A vehicle electric drive system includes an internal combustion engine, an electric motor/generator driven by the engine, a first inverter/rectifier coupled to motor/generator, a bus coupled to the first inverter/rectifier, a second inverter/rectifier coupled to the bus, and a traction motor/generator coupled to an output of the second inverter/rectifier, an operator speed control member, and a controller coupled to the second inverter/rectifier for controlling a current output of the second inverter/rectifier as a function of a position of the speed control member. Also included is an operator controlled foot pedal and a transducer coupled to the foot pedal and generating a signal representing foot pedal position which is supplied to the controller. The controller limits current supplied by the second inverter/rectifier to the traction motor/generator to a limit current as a function of the transducer signal. The controller, foot pedal and transducer cooperate to vary the limit current in response to movement of the foot pedal. A spring biases the foot pedal to an upper limit position. The controller causes the second inverter/rectifier to supply to the traction motor/generator a maximum amount of current, (such maximum current being a function of the foot pedal position), but not more than that required to achieve the speed commanded by the speed control.

Variable current limit control for vehicle electric drive system

A multiple fuel tank arrangement for maximizing fuel delivery to a vehicle during off level operation. The system has a tank from which fuel is withdrawn and at least one additional tank located at approximately the same level. The tanks are connected by a transfer line and crossover line. The transfer line connects the bottom of the tanks and only allows fuel flow into the fuel withdrawal tank. Openings for the crossover line are positioned such that a large volume of fuel is trapped in the fuel withdrawal tank when the tanks are as different relative elevations during off level operation.

Fuel recovery system for dual tanks

An adjustable wheel assembly which facilitates the positioning of a wheel on an axle. The wheel assembly includes an elongated axle having a rack and a keyway, a wheel hub, and two pairs of arc-shaped wedges positioned between the axle and the wheel hub. Two of the four arc-shaped wedges are inserted into a tapered bore on one side of the wheel hub and the remaining two wedges are inserted into a second tapered bore on the opposite side of the wheel hub. Each of the four arc-shaped wedges further contains a radial flange with bolt holes therethrough so that each wedge can be bolted to the wheel hub. In addition, one of the wedges contains a radial opening housing pinion gear which meshes with the rack on the axle so as to axially move the wheel hub along the axle. The wheel assembly also contains a pair of jackscrews which are used to force two of the oppositely aligned wedges axially apart thereby allowing the wheel hub to be released from the axle.
