A hermetically sealed injection laser package is made by first forming a sub-assembly of a monitoring photodiode (50) on a metal support member (53) and welding it to a heat sink (30) on which the laser (31) is mounted. The heat sink is secured inside the package housing (10) and then a further sub-assembly, comprising a plastics packaged optical fiber (60) hermetically sealed in a fiber support tube (61), is introduced through an aperture in one wall of the housing. Anchorage means (70) is laser beam welded to this tube and to the heat sink to secure the inner end in position for optimum optical coupling between the laser and the fiber.

Injection laser packages

An injection laser mount assembly comprises a housing having a front surface extending in a plane parallel with a rear surface. The front surface has a central recess from which a pillar extends for carrying a laser. Optical coupling can be made with the laser by converting the mount assembly to an optical fiber termination.

Planar laser mount

A laser stud mount wherein one terminal connection is provided by the stud and the other by a strip line. One embodiment includes a light guide extending through the stem of the stud mount or along the surface of the stud base for monitoring the light output from the back end of the laser. The monitored light from the back end of the laser can be used to regulate the laser drive.

Laser stud mounts

Fiber optic ribbons are attached to the output facets of laser dice which are positioned in thin slotted anodised aluminum plates between indium coated copper plates. A plurality of such plates provide a stack which is compression bonded with the opposite laser faces extending into the adjoining indium coatings. The sides are lapped and clamped to a heat sink.
