This invention relates to a method for molding composite automotive trim members having a layer of a first material and a backing member made of a second thermoplastic material. The first material is introduced to the mold in the form of an elastic sheet having a show surface. This sheet is placed in the mold and the second thermoplastic material is subsequently injected into the mold cavity. This causes the second thermoplastic material to bond to one side of the sheet and forces the show surface on the opposite side of the sheet into abutting engagement with the mold surface, thereby creating the trim member. The second thermoplastic material forms a backing member that provides structural support for the sheet. The sheet forms an outer layer for the trim member. Note that the show surface on the sheet remains intact during and after injection and therefore provides a show surface for the trim member.

A molding for attachment to a vehicle includes a support member and a first colored layer secured to the support member. A second colored layer is abutted to the first colored layer at one edge thereof, and secured to the support member. The first and second colored layers are of similar colors presenting a color matched molding.

The present invention is a weather seal for a garage door having a base member secured to a support surface. A block is pivotally connected to the base member for pivotal movement relative to the base member. A sealing lip is connected to the block and has a first position in the plane of the base member. The block includes a first triangular for engaging the support surface for pivotally moving the block and sealing lip at an angle to the base member when installed so that the sealing lip engages a door to effect a seal between the door and the sealing lip.

A trim molding for attachment to a vehicle includes a core member having an outer periphery less than a predetermined thickness. An end is formed at each end of the core member. An outer layer is molded about one side of the core member and ends to form a smooth continuous surface to the predetermined thickness and to prevent a joint line from visually appearing between the ends and the core member in the outer layer.

A molding for attachment to a vehicle includes a core member having a plurality of longitudinally spaced clip members and apertures between the clip members. An outer layer is extruded about the core member. The core member is formed to a predetermined configuration and presents an outer surface having ridges corresponding to clip members and valleys corresponding to the apertures. A cover layer covers the outer layer to fill the valleys to form a smooth continuous planar outer surface.

A body side molding for automotive vehicles has an L-shaped receiver and an elongated member overlappingly interfitted with the receiver. The width of the body side molding and the visible portion of its brightwork is dependent upon the degree of overlap of the elongated member by the receiver and can be varied along the length of the molding strip.

Method of making a smooth flexible flange cover

A thermoplastic vehicle trim or molding member includes a preferably elongated slot or cavity in one side. A stud or mounting member having an elongated base is inserted into the cavity, heated and rotated such that the elongated portions of the base locally melt, traverse through, and embed themselves into, the surrounding thermoplastic material. The thermoplastic is allowed to cool to form a secure, interlocking attachment to the molding member.

A flange cover for embracing engagement with and clamping retention on a flange edge. The flange cover is an elongated strip of a generally U-shaped cross section defining a pair of legs connected by a web. Each leg has at least one retention lip extending inwardly therefrom and is made of a lower durometer thermoplastic material than the web. The flange cover is made by extruding a flat, elongated strip with a middle portion of higher durometer than side portions, said side portions having retention lips projecting therefrom, and then bending the strip along its longitudinal axis to form a flange cover having a U-shaped cross section.
