A method of reducing carbonaceous deposits on a fuel injector is provided in which a first fuel composition is supplied to the fuel injector in a dual fuel engine, the first fuel composition comprising natural gas fuel and a first percentage of diesel fuel; and a second fuel composition is supplied to the fuel injector in a dual fuel engine, the second fuel composition comprising a second percentage of diesel fuel that is greater than the first percentage of diesel fuel to cause cavitation to occur within the fuel injector, thereby reducing carbonaceous deposits.

Method for reducing carbon/coke in fuel injectors in dual fuel applications

Systems and related methods for regulating fuel rail pressure for internal combustion engines utilizing an electronic fuel transfer pump (eFTP) on the low side to provide robust control of fuel pressure on the high side. The eFTP is in fluid communication with a low-pressure fuel circuit for providing a low-pressure fuel flow at a low pressure to a high-pressure pump. Upon failure of a fuel control valve, a pressure-responsive valve, and/or a pressure sensor impacting the high-side fuel pressure, the eFTP modulates the low-side fuel flow and/or low-side fuel pressure to mitigate damage to the engine. A controller in operative communication with the eFTP and/or one or more sensors is configured to provide a pump command to the eFTP in response to a failure condition impacting the high-side fuel pressure.

Regulation of fuel rail pressure using electronic fuel transfer pump in low pressure fuel circuits

One embodiment is a filter element including an outer filter media and an inner filter media. The outer filter media is operable to remove particulates present in a flow of fluid and/or coalesce water contained in the flow of fluid. The inner filter media is operable to remove particulates from the flow of fluid, separate water form the flow of fluid, and remove particulates from the flow of fluid. Replaceable filter elements including plural filter media and related filtration systems, techniques and methods

A filter within a filter cartridge design is described that includes a sealing structure on an endplate of an outer filter element. Generally, the sealing structure includes an annular flange on the endplate that can directly seal against an interior surface of a housing when the filter cartridge is assembled for use. During filtration, the annular flange prevents a working fluid from bypassing the outer filter element. The sealing flange can seal with the housing in a press fit engagement.

A fuel supply system and method of controlling fuel flow through a supply system is provided including a variable flow, i.e. speed, electric fuel transfer pump and a control system adapted to variably control the transfer pump based on fuel demand of the engine. The system provides improved transient response by providing the transfer pump with a feed forward speed/flow command based on engine fueling demand determined based on engine operating conditions. The transfer pump is controlled based on fuel demand not necessarily achieved yet by the high pressure pump and injectors. Therefore, this system controls the EFTP substantially simultaneously with controlling the high pressure pump and injectors to optimize fuel flow through the entire system ensuring the minimum required fuel flow is passing through the second the fuel filtration system, hence maximizing steady state fuel filtration efficiency, and minimizing surge effects on filtration efficiency.

Variable flow fuel transfer pump system and method

This disclosure relates a system for heating fuel supplied by a common rail fuel supply to an internal combustion engine. The system includes a high pressure fuel line, plural fuel injectors connected in series along the high pressure fuel line in the common rail, and a continuous low pressure passage including a heat exchanging portion in close proximity to the high pressure fuel line. A heated fluid source is operative to fluidly communicate with the continuous low pressure passage and circulate heated fluid to heat fuel present in the high pressure fuel line prior to, and during a cold start operation of the internal combustion engine. Other embodiments relate to a method of providing fuel to an internal combustion engine that includes sensing the temperature of fuel supplied to a fuel system and determining whether the sensed fuel temperature is greater than a predetermined value. The method includes circulating heated fluid in a continuous low pressure circuit to heat fuel present in a high pressure fuel line if the sensed fuel temperature is less than or equal to a predetermined value, and evacuating fluid for heating fuel from a portion of the continuous low pressure passage and fluidly connecting the evacuated portion of the continuous low pressure passage to a fuel leakage detection device if the sensed fuel temperature is greater than the predetermined value.

Fuel heating system and method

A pump system for preventing hot start knock in a diesel engine following engine shut down carried by fuel leakage into one or more of the combustion chambers of a multiple-cylinder internal combustion engine equipped with a fuel system including open nozzle injectors connected with a common rail. The system includes a transfer pump (46) in fluid communication with the common rail (50) and the fuel tank (48) for pumping fuel out of the common rail and into the fuel tank. A transfer pump control module (82) is provided for actuating the transfer pump (46) for a period of time following engine shut down to remove a sufficient amount of fuel from the common rail to prevent fuel from leakage through the open nozzles. The control system module may include a timer (96) and a voltage sensor (86) to sense condition of a fuel shut off valve (64). A retrofit kit (FIG. 5) is provided including a control module bracket (98) and a transfer module bracket (102).

A leak prevention device including an expandable chamber and control valve for preventing fuel leakage into the combustion chambers of a internal combustion engine equipped with a common rail fule injection system including open nozzle injectors and a shut off valve mounted in the common rail upstream of the fuel injectors to isolate, when closed, the fuel injectors from the source of fuel under pressure. The expandable chamber contains a variable volume held in its collapsed condition during engine operation and expanded upon engine shutdown sufficiently to prevent the flow of fuel from any injector into the corresponding combustion chamber. The control valve may be a three way valve for controlling the expansion of the variable volume of the expandable chamber The leak prevention device includes a housing assembly connected with a fuel drain and contains an outlet passage fluidically connected at one end with the variable volume and at the other end with the fuel drain and an outlet check valve for allowing fuel to flow in only one direction from the variable volume into the fuel drain. A control circuit is provided to energize solenoids for operating the shut off valve and control valve.

An electronic fuel injector includes a metering chamber defined by a metering piston and the sides and bottom of a bore defined within the injector body, and a timing chamber defined by the metering piston, the bore sides and a timing plunger slidably disposed within the bore. A biasing spring is connected to opposing surfaces of the timing plunger and metering piston for biasing the metering piston away from the timing plunger. The metering chamber is in constant fuel communication with a pressurized fuel source and the timing chamber receives fuel from the fuel source according to the actuation of a solenoid actuated control valve disposed therebetween. A fueling strategy for such an injector requires actuating the control valve to substantially fill the timing chamber before filling the metering chamber, for subsequent injection into the engine, when the force of the biasing spring is at a minimum.
