An object of the present invention is to provide a method for manufacturing a multi-stage compression type rotary compressor which can avoid the replacement of parts to be used as much as possible to reduce costs and also which enables easily setting an appropriate displacement volume ratio while preventing the compressor from being increased in size. The gist of the present invention is that an inner diameter of a lower cylinder is altered without altering its thickness (or height), and a displacement volume ratio between first and second rotary compression elements is set to an optimum value in accordance with the alteration.

A method for manufacturing a multi-stage compression type rotary compressor which avoids the replacement of parts to be used as much as possible to reduce costs and also which enables easily setting an appropriate displacement volume ratio between first and second rotary compression elements without increasing the size of the compressor outer housing. This is done by altering the inner diameter of the cylinder of one of the rotary compression elements without altering the thickness (or height) of this cylinder to set a displacement volume ratio between the first and second rotary compression elements to an optimum value in accordance with the alteration.

A multi-stage compression type rotary compressor is provided with an electrical-power element , the first and second rotary compression elements driven by a rotary shaft of the electrical-power element in a sealed vessel . The refrigerant compressed by the first rotary compression element is compressed by the second rotary compression element . The refrigerant is combustible. The refrigerant compressed by the first rotary compression element is discharged to the sealed vessel . The discharged medium pressure refrigerant is compressed by the second rotary compression element . Additionally, the displacement volume ratio of the second rotary compression element to the first rotary compression element is set not less than 60% and not more than 90%. By using the multi-stage compression type rotary compressor, a rotary compressor using a combustible refrigerant can be carried out.

In a multistage rotary compressor using a refrigerant such as carbon dioxide (CO ) and the like which becomes high in a discharge pressure, operating efficiency thereof can be enhanced by appropriately setting the ratio between displacement of the respective rotary compression elements and the areas of discharge ports thereof. In the multistage rotary compressor comprising an electric element in a hermetic shell case, and first and second rotary compression elements which are driven by the electric element, wherein a refrigerant which is compressed and discharged by the first rotary compression element is drawn into and compressed by the second rotary compression element and discharged thereby, wherein the ratio of S2/S1 is set to be smaller than ratio of V2/V1, where S1 is an area of a discharge port of the first rotary compression element, S2 is an area of a discharge port of the second rotary compression element, V1 is displacement of the first rotary compression element, and V2 is displacement of the second rotary compression element.
