An improved game machine having recorded data different from other respective game machines and being able to use the recorded data on different types of game programs is provided. The game machine contains a built-in storing means for storing unrewritable information inherent in respective game machines which can be used on different types of game programs and information peculiar to respective game machines which is changed without depending on a game program which can be used on different kinds of game programs.

A hand-held LCD game machine is combined with a cartridge in which the program datum is memorized. The game machine has a smaller and oblong shape LCD display. When the game is operated in a vertical scrolling manner, the LCD display portion is used lengthwise, while when the operated game is in a horizontal scrolling manner, the LCD display is used sideways. The game is operated by both thumbs of the player's hands, and plural operative key sets and switches are provided in proper positions so that the game machine may be smoothly operated by the player in either a lengthwise or sideways position.

An electronic apparatus is provided that can eliminate unlawful cartridges while preventing a malfunction by checking whether there is a short-circuit of pin terminals at the time of turning on the power source and conducting further improved security checks. The electronic apparatus has an electronic apparatus body 2 and a cartridge 5 to be detachably mounted to the electronic apparatus body 2. The cartridge 5 is equipped with a connector having a plurality of terminals and is connected to the electronic apparatus body 2 via the connector. The electronic apparatus body 2 outputs a first and a second short-circuit detecting signal for conducting a short-circuit detection of a circuit portion connected via the plurality of terminals. The cartridge 5 receives the first short-circuit detecting signal and the second short-circuit detecting signal via the plurality of terminals and determines whether the circuit portion is short-circuited or not based on the received first and second short-circuit detecting signals.
