Flame-retardant resin composition

A polyester resin composition comprising (A) an aromatic polyester resin and (B) a polyester block copolymer resin which consists essentially of (a) a polyester soft block comprising an aromatic dicarboxylic acid component and a glycol component having 5 or more carbon atoms as main constituents and having a melting point of about 100.degree. C. or less or being amorphous and (b) a polyester hard block having a melting point of about 150.degree. C. or more. A relay component formed of the above polyester resin composition has excellent vibration-damping and noise suppression properties.

Polyester resin composition and a relay component formed thereof

A resin molded article having a moveable projecting portion suitable for use in forming a keyboard or keyboard switch and which is substantially free from flex fatigue. At least the moveable projecting portion of the molded article is formed from a resin composition containing a polyether ester block copolymer and a small amount of an alkali metal salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid having 10 to 36 carbon atoms. The polyether ester block copolymer contains units from terephthalic acid, tetramethylene glycol and polyoxytetramethylene glycol. The resin molded article includes a thick projecting (moveable) portion, a base portion and a flexible thin side portion connecting the thick projecting portion to the base portion. The side portion has a thickness of 0.05 to 0.5 mm and a flexibility retention of at least 85%.

A polyester block copolymer having an inherent viscosity of at least 0.6, which comprises (A) 30 to 90% by weight of polyester segments comprising a benzenedicarboxylic acid as the main acid component and a diol having 5 to 12 carbon atoms between the hydroxyl groups as the main glycol component and (B) 70 to 10% by weight of polyester segments comprising an aromatic dicarboxylic acid as the main acid component and ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol or 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol as the main glycol component, wherein (i) when a polyester having an inherent viscosity of at least 0.6 is formed by polycondensation of the components constituting the polyester segments (A), the melting point of the obtained polyester is lower than 50.degree. C. or the obtained polyester is amorphous, and (ii) when a polyester having an inherent viscosity of at least 0.6 is formed by polycondensation of the components constituting the polyester segments (B), the melting point of the polyester is higher than 180.degree. C. This polyester block copolymer provides an elastic yarn having a high elastic recovery and a high heat resistance.

A phosphazene polymer carrier is prepared that has functional groups capable of binding a biologically active substance such as an enzyme or antibody and groups which are non-reactive and hydrophilic. A bifunctional aldehyde is reacted with primary amino groups of a shaped phosphazene polymer to form side chains having aldehyde groups, an amino group-containing compound is reacted with a portion of the aldehyde groups to produce the groups that are non-reactive and hydrophilic, and aldehyde groups not reacted are capable of binding a biologically active substance. The phosphazene polymer may be crosslinked prior to reacting with the bifunctional aldehyde. In another embodiment, a protecting agent is reacted with a portion of the aldehyde groups to block the aldehyde groups, imino bonds are reduced, a compound having an amino group is reacted with aldehyde groups not blocked to form the groups which are non-reactive and hydrophilic, and the protecting agent is removed to provide aldehyde groups capable of binding a biologically active substance. The non-reactive and hydrophilic groups may also be formed by reacting primary amino groups with formaldehyde or by diazotizing primary amino groups of the polymer followed by hydrolysis to form hydroxyl groups. A biologically active substance immobilized on the polymer can be used to separate a substance that has affinity for the immobilized biologically active substance.

Immobilization of biologically active substances with a polyphosphazene

A phosphazene polymer for immobilizing biologically active substances such as enzymes is prepared that does not lower activity originally possessed by the biologically active substance and does not contain a functionality which can adsorb undesired substances. The polymer has organic radicals having a functional group capable of binding a biologically active substance and organic radicals which are non-reactive and hydrophilic. The non-reactive and hydrophilic organic radicals are preferably prepared by reacting a side chain of the polymer having a primary amino group with formaldehyde or by diazotizing the primary amino group followed by hydrolysis to form a hydroxyl group. A biologically active substance immobilized on the polymer can be used to separate a substance that has affinity for the immobilized biologically active substance.

A shaped polyphosphazene article having a modified surface portion thereof and exhibiting a desired property and/or performance comprises a polyphosphazene polymer having at least 50 molar % or more of repeating units of the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 in the first and second side chains --OR.sup.1 and --OR.sup.2 respectively represent, independently from each other, an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical, and having at least a portion of a surface portion thereof in which at least 5 molar % of the first and second side chains are converted to one or more types of third side chains --OR.sup.3 wherein R.sup.3 represents an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical and which are different from --OR.sup.1 and --OR.sup.2.

A process for preparing a high-molecular weight polyester comprising additionally polymerizing a polyester obtained from a dicarboxylic acid component composed mainly of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and/or an ester-forming derivative thereof and a glycol component composed mainly of ethylene glycol and/or an ester-forming derivative thereof and having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.8, at a temperature above the melting point of the polyester and under a reduced pressure, in the presence of a compound (A) successively generating a substance which is gaseous under the polymerization conditions and does not substantially reduce the molecular weight of the polyester, to form a polyester having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 1.0.

Process for preparation of high-molecular weight polyester

A fibrous composite comprising a coalesced assembly of (A) a sheet-like mesh structure composed of fibers of a synthetic elastomeric polymer, the individual fibers being interconnected at random in irregular spaced-apart relationship thereby forming a number of meshes of different shapes and sizes, said mesh structure having a recovery ratio after 10% stretch of at least 70% in two arbitrarily selected, mutually perpendicular directions on the plane of said mesh structure, and (B) a mat-, web- or sheet-like fibrous structure composed of short or long fibers, said fibrous structure having a recovery ratio after 10% stretch of less than 50% in at least one arbitrarily selected direction. An elastic fibrous composite of this invention is suitable as various apparel base materials and industrial materials such as filter clothes, adsorbents, and heat insulating materials.

A fire-retardant thermoplastic polyester resin composition consisting essentially of (A) 100 parts by weight of an aromatic polyester resin, (B) 1 to 100 parts by weight of a fire retardant which is a medium molecular weight polymer of a carbonate of a brominated dihydric phenol having at least about 16 recurring units optionally with an antimony compound, (C) 0 to about 120 parts by weight of glass fibers, and (D) 0 to about 10 parts by weight of at least one additive.

An improved process for producing a linear polyester having a high degree of polymerization which comprises first preparing a prepolymer of polyester and then polycondensing the prepolymer. In the first step, a prepolymer having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.2 is prepared, and the subsequent polycondensation is carried out in the presence of an organic boron compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 represent an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl group having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, and M represents a monovalent metal. According to this method, the polycondensation can be performed at atmospheric pressure, and a substantially linear polyester having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.5 and superior thermal stability can be obtained rapidly.

A process for preparing polyesters having superior thermal stability, transparency and chemical resistance, which comprises (1) a first step of esterifying (A) a difunctional carboxylic acid containing at least 60 mole% of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, (B) 0 to 80 mole%, based on component (A), of an aliphatic diol and/or a dihydroxybenzene and (C) an aromatic monohydroxy compound in an amount of at least 210 mole% as a total of it and component (B) based on component (A), the esterification being performed until the degree of esterification reaches at least 80%, (2) subsequently, a second step of adding 0 to 80 mole%, based on component (A), of component (B) and a bisphenol (D) in an amount of 100 to 130 mole% as a total of it and component (B) based on component (A) to the reaction product obtained in the first step and reacting the mixture, the total amount of components (B) used in the first and second steps being 0 to 80 mole% based on component (C), and (3) performing at least the first of the above steps in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon medium having a boiling point of 105.degree. to 175.degree. C at normal atmospheric pressure and being inert at the reaction temperature.
