A number of embodiments of engine controls and engine control methods that employ instantaneous rate of combustion is the combustion chamber at a sensed parameter. Rate of combustion is determined by a linear equation based upon data arrived from combustion chamber pressures. The system is adapted to operate under different control modes so as to provide specific control for normal running, lean burn, maximum torque, cold starting, transient conditions, and/or knock control. The desired rate of combustion is achieved by engine control adjustments.

Engine control system and method

A number of embodiments of engine controls and engine control methods that employ instantaneous rate of combustion is the combustion chamber at a sensed parameter. Rate of combustion is determined by a linear equation based upon data arrived from combustion chamber pressures. The system is adapted to operate under different control modes so as to provide specific control for normal running, lean burn, maximum torque, cold starting, transient conditions, and/or knock control.

An engine measurement and control methodology wherein the engine combustion rate and IMEP are measured by measuring the in-cylinder pressure at specific crank angles and utilizing a basic reading of pressure in the combustion chamber when it will be near to atmospheric, and also at at least one point in time after ignition begins and before top dead center. The measured data can be employed for fine tuning the engine control to obtain optimum performance.

Several embodiments of engine intake systems that improve the charging efficiency by providing a closed branch passage which forms a volume in the intake tract between the throttle valve and the point of discharge into an engine chamber. The illustrated embodiments of the application of this concept is to both four and two cycle engines. In addition, a plenum chamber is illustrated for permitting the effective volume of the branch passage to be increased without unduly increasing its length. The branch passage outlet in certain embodiments is oriented so that its discharge during the intake cycle increases turbulence to improve combustion efficiency.

Intake system for engine

An apparatus and method for maintaining the control of lubricant to a two cycle engine so as to provide adequate lubrication without over lubrication and deleterious exhaust conditions, such as smoke. The system includes a lubricant pump that has both its output and its timing of discharge variable. Under one range of running conditions, the normal conditions, the output of the pump is maintained constant and the timing of the output is varied. Under high speed, high load conditions, the time of operation of the pump is held constant and the output time of the pump is varied.

Lubricant supply for two cycle engine

A two cycle crankcase compression diesel engine having reed type checks valves for controlling the flow of air into a crankcase chamber though an intake passage. The engine is provided with a separate lubricating system in which no lubricant for lubrication is delivered to the intake passage upstream of the check valve. The closing noise of the check valve is dampened by delivery small quantities of lubricant to the intake passage solely for this purpose. In one embodiment, this lubricant is derived from the crankcase and in another embodiment the lubricant is supplied directly from the separate lubricating system.

Two stroke diesel engine

A combustion chamber and method of operating a diesel engine to insure maximum air utilization. The engine has a main chamber and a subchamber that communicates with the main chamber through a communication passageway. Fuel injection into the subchamber is begun at a time when the throat area of the engine by which the main chamber communicates with the communication passageway is equivalent to approximately the effective flow area of the communication passageway so as to insure maximum air utilization.

Diesel engine

A combustion chamber configuration and porting arrangement for a two-cycle crankcase compression diesel engine that improves scavenging. An exhaust port opens into one side of the engine cylinder bore and the scavenge ports and a precombustion chamber are configured so that they discharge their gases in an area diametrically opposed to the exhaust port for improving scavenging.

Combustion chamber importing system for two-cycle diesel engine

Two embodiments of induction systems for internal combustion engines that improve charging efficiency, particularly at low speeds and throttle openings. In each embodiment a plenum chamber is provided that communicates with the induction system between the throttle valve and the chamber which is served. In each embodiment a control valve controls the communication of the plenum chamber with the induction passage for substantially restricting the communication when the throttle valve of the engine is in its wide open position.

Intake system of engines

Several embodiments of induction systems for internal combustion engines that improve charging efficiency over a widespread range, particularly at the lower speeds of the engine. Each embodiment includes a plurality of plenum chambers each of which communicates with the intake passage of the engine between the throttle valve and the served chamber. In one embodiment, the plenum chambers communicate with the induction system through separate branch passages. In other embodiments, the plenum chambers communicate with the induction system through each other.
