A display device is provided in which the number of gradation levels in a display is increased without increasing the number of terminals of a driving device. A display block of one pixel in an image display screen including a plurality of cells are provided with M (two or more) cells having the same light color, and the structures of these cells are made different partially from each other, so that (M+1) types of light emission quantity control including non-light emission can be performed.

A plasma display panel driving system and method for a display panel having a first common electrode and first independent electrodes arranged at a back plate side, a second common electrode and second independent electrodes arranged at a face plate side, an inner partition positioned between the first common and independent electrodes at the back plate side and the second common and independent electrodes at the face plate side and having an aperture therein connecting a space at the back plate side and a space at the face plate side, and a fluorescent layer arranged in the space at the face plate side. The driving system and method includes a driver for driving the first and second independent and common electrodes through a full writing period, a front surface erasing period, a writing period, and a discharge sustaining period, including supplying a first full writing pulse to the first common electrode at the back plate side and a second full writing pulse having a polarity which is opposite to the polarity of the first full writing pulse to the first independent electrodes at the back plate side for causing discharge between the first common and independent electrodes in the full writing period.

Plasma display panel driving system and method

To achieve an expansion of color reproducibility and an improvement in contrast ratio, color filters 8R, 8G and 8B formed in stripes are successively arranged on one surface of a front glass substrate 1, interposing a black matrixes 7 between them. Sustaining electrodes 6 are provided thereon and a dielectric layer 9 and a protecting layer 10 are provided. On a rear glass substrate 2, barrier ribs 3 are provided in the manner they face the respective black matrixes 7, and thus the spaces between the barrier ribs 3 facing the respective color filters 8R, 8G and 8B form cells. The cells are respectively provided with the sustaining electrodes 6 falling at right angles with the address electrodes 4, coated with fluorescent substances 5R, 5G and 5B corresponding to the respective colors, and also sealed to hold discharge gas therein. A wave band selecting filter 11 for screening the light emitted from the discharge gas in the respective cells is provided on the other surface of the front glass substrate 1.

A plasma display apparatus is disclosed, in which a plurality of pixels are arranged in dot matrix, at least one first electrode specifies the addresses of the pixels, a set of electrodes including a second electrode and a third electrode are arranged in a plurality of pixels for generating a pixel display plasma, and a phosphor member arranged in a plurality of pixels for illuminating light due to the ultraviolet light generated from the pixel display plasma. When a voltage is applied to auxiliary discharge electrodes, auxiliary discharge occurs in an auxiliary discharge space and excited charged particles communicate with a main discharge space through a priming path made in a discharge space separation bulkhead. In this state, when an alternating voltage is applied between bus electrodes on a front substrate, main discharge occurs in the main discharge space, causing Xe atoms in the sealed gas to generate ultraviolet rays, causing a phosphor to emit light. However, since the auxiliary discharge is shielded by a bulkhead and a barrier rib, the phosphor does not emit light when only auxiliary discharge occurs.

A picture communication apparatus includes an extracting circuit for extracting video data of at least one portion from video data inputted thereto, an encoder for respectively encoding the extracted video data and the remaining video data, and a multiplexer for multiplexing the encoded video data.
