A magnetic disk apparatus which protects magnetic disks from being damaged by an external shock applied thereto. The magnetic disk apparatus includes a shock absorber provided in the enclosure for absorbing a shock of the magnetic disk caused by vibration of the magnetic disk. Alternatively or additionally the magnetic disk apparatus includes a shock absorber for covering a surface of the enclosure which houses the disk drive components.

A magnetic disk drive comprises a plurality of disks that have a laminated arrangement with equally fixed spaces respectively and are rotatably mounted a disk driving unit that forces the disks to rotate, a plurality of positioners mounted and movable in the direction of the tracks of the disks respectively, a positioner driving unit that drives the positioners so that their respective ends can traverse the tracks, and a plurality of reproducing/recording elements e.g., unitary magnetic heads that are fixed on the respective ends of the positioners and perform read/write operations for the surfaces of recording media of the disks, respectively. Disclosed herein is a magnetic disk drive including a head actuator for moving a head across tracks of a magnetic disk. The head actuator includes an actuator arm rotatably mounted in a housing, for supporting at its tip the head. The magnetic disk drive further includes an inner stopper adapted to come into contact with the actuator arm, for stopping excess movement of the actuator arm toward an inner circumferential portion of the disk, and an outer stopper adapted to come into contact with the actuator arm, for stopping excess movement of the actuator arm toward an outer circumferential portion of the disk. The inner stopper is the same in structure as the outer stopper. Each of the inner stopper and the outer stopper includes a shaft fixed to a base of the housing and having an outer circumferential surface formed with an annular groove, and a cylindrical rubber cushion mounted on the outer circumferential surface of the shaft so as to cover the annular groove.

A magnetic disk drive for locking an actuator mounted with a magnetic head in a safety zone. The magnetic disk drive comprises a magnet, fixed yoke members and a stopper for setting a stop position of rotations of the rotary actuator in such a position that torque by the fixed yoke members and the magnet is maximized. The fixed yoke members form a magnetic circuit for the magnet in all or a part of a movable range of the rotary actuator. The fixed yoke members include a first area having a gap width uniformly reduced in a lock direction to retract the rotary actuator and a second area having a gap width smaller than a gap width of the first area. The fixed yoke members are mechanically separated from each other. The fixed yoke members further include a second area having a minimum gap width to lock the rotary actuator, a first area having such a gap that a gap width becomes smaller as it approaches the second area and a third area formed between the second area and the first area and having a gap width larger than a gap width of the second area.

Disclosed is a magnetic disk apparatus which protects magnetic disks against external and internal magnetic fields and electromagnetic waves. This magnetic disk apparatus comprises at least one magnetic disk; rotation unit for rotating the magnetic disk; a magnetic head for recording and reproducing information on and from the magnetic disk; an actuator for supporting the magnetic head and moving the magnetic head to a given position on the magnetic disk; and an enclosure for covering those individual components. According to one aspect of this invention, the enclosure is made of a ferromagnetic material. According to another aspect of this invention, the enclosure is made of a non-magnetic material and a shield layer made of a ferromagnetic material is provided at least in that region of an inner wall of the enclosure which corresponds to the movable range of the magnetic head. According to a further aspect of this invention, this apparatus further comprises a circuit board provided on the inner wall of the enclosure, circuitry for accomplishing magnetic recording and reproduction being mounted on the circuit board, and a shield layer provided between the enclosure and the circuit board. According to a still further aspect of this invention, this apparatus further comprises a circuit board provided on the inner wall of the enclosure, circuitry for accomplishing magnetic recording and reproduction being mounted on the circuit board, and a conductive shield member provided between the magnetic disk and the circuit board.

Each of the reproducing/recording elements is constructed such that each of the elements is adjustable in the rolling direction with respect to the respectively corresponding surface of recording media of the disks and adjustable in the distance from the respectively corresponding surface of recording media of the disks. Preferably, the method for assembling the disk drive includes the steps of locating the arras in a desired position, driving the sliding portions, detecting at least the degree of angle and relative distance between each one tip portion of the unitary magnetic heads and the respectively corresponding surfaces of recording media of the disks, and fixing the sliding portions and the guide portions to each other.

A disc apparatus includes rotatable discs each having a recording disc surface or surfaces, a head for recording and reproducing information to or from the disc, and an actuator for moving the head along the surface of the disc. The disc, the head, the actuator, and the like are accommodated in a rectangular housing which is supported on a frame of the apparatus by four dampers arranged at four corners of the housing. The center of gravity of the housing is located nearer one corner with respect to the other corners. The spring constant of the damper located at the corner which is at the greatest distance from the center of gravity is smaller than the spring constants of the other dampers.
