A magnetic recording medium in which information can be recorded using a heat-assisted magnetic recording method comprises a recording layer formed on a substrate. The recording layer has a plurality of magnetic recording bit regions and a plurality of high thermal conductors each extending inside a corresponding one of the bit regions. The high thermal conductors have a thermal conductivity higher than that of the recording layer and assist in dissipating heat energy imparted to the bit regions during the recording of information.

Magnetic recording medium

A U-shaped groove and a V-shaped groove are formed onto a cladding disposed on a substrate, a core and a metal structure are formed inside the grooves, respectively, and then the substrate surface is planarized. Further, after a cladding is formed again, the substrate is cut and the cut surface is polished such that the metal structure inside the V-shaped groove has a predetermined thickness, thereby forming a scattering body.

Method of manufacturing near-field light generating element and near-field light generating element

A near-field light generating element has a core that propagates light flux from a light incident side to a light emission side while focusing the propagating light flux. A near-field light generating portion in the form of a metal film generates near-field light from the light flux. The core includes a first core, and a second core covering a side surface of the first core, and the core is formed in a polygonal shape when viewed from a Z direction. The metal film is placed on a side surface in the core, and is formed so that a width of an interface between the metal film and the core is narrower than a width of the side surface of the core.

Near-field light generating element, method of manufacturing near-field light generating element, near-field light head, method of manufacturing near-field light head, and information recording and playback device

A near-field optical head for recording and reading-out information on and from a recording medium by utilizing near-field light produced from a very small aperture. The very small aperture is formed at an apex of a taper formed by an optical propagation member having a tip pointed toward a recording medium. A light introducing part is connected directly to the optical propagation member for propagating light along an optical path extending in a direction generally parallel to the recording medium. The optical propagation member is formed of a uniform dielectric layer in the light introducing part and inside of the taper. A light reflection layer reflects light propagated through the light introducing part toward the very small aperture.

Near-field optical head having tapered hole for guiding light beam

A head gimbal assembly has a flexure forming a part of a suspension configured to extend along a surface of a recording medium. A flexible substrate is provided on the flexure. A slider is mounted onto at least a part of the flexible substrate so as to oppose the surface of the recording medium, and is configured to generate near field light from an introduced light flux. A light supply portion is mounted on the flexure and is provided between the flexure and the slider. The flexible substrate has an end surface forming a mirror surface that faces an end surface of the light supply portion and is inclined with respect to an optical axis of the light supply portion. The light supply portion is optically coupled to the slider via the mirror surface of the flexible substrate.

Head gimbal assembly using near-field light and information recording and reproducing apparatus including the same

A metal film is included which is placed between a core and a cladding, propagates a laser beam along an interface between the core and the cladding, and generates a near-field light from the laser beam. The metal film has a base portion placed on one side surface of the core along a propagation direction of the laser beam facing from one end side toward the other end side, and an extending portion extended from the other end side of the base portion to the other end side in the propagation direction rather than the core. The other end side of the extending portion is exposed to the outside, and is formed with a top portion projected toward the core side when viewed from the propagation direction.

Near-field light generating element, near-field light head, and information recording and reproducing device

A near-field light generating element has a core that guides a laser light in a direction of a disk while reflecting the laser light, and a cladding that encapsulates the core in an inner portion, and lengths of a longitudinal direction and a transverse direction of an incident side end surface of the laser light in the core are formed so as to match the lengths of a long axis direction and a short axis direction of the laser light that is entered to the core.

Recording head, method of manufacturing recording head, and information recording and playback apparatus

A near-field optical head has a planar substrate having a first surface, a second surface disposed opposite to the first surface, and an inverted pyramidal hole extending through the first and second surfaces. The inverted pyramidal hole has at least one fine aperture formed at an apex thereof and disposed in the first surface and having at least one curved slant surface. An optical waveguide extends into the inverted pyramidal hole of the planar substrate for propagating light along an optical path. A mirror is disposed in the optical waveguide for bending in the direction of the fine aperture the optical path of the light propagated through the optical waveguide.

An information reproducing apparatus has a medium with a linear tracking mark extending in a scanning direction and a linear data mark extending in a direction orthogonal to the scanning direction. A light control unit irradiates the data mark with a first near-field light polarized in the scanning direction and irradiates the tracking mark with a second near-field light polarized in the direction orthogonal to the scanning direction. A detector detects light scattered by the data mark and the tracking mark irradiated with the first near-field light and the second near-field light, respectively. A signal processing unit processes a first output signal from the detector corresponding to the detected light scattered by the data mark and processes a second output signal from the detector corresponding to the detected light scattered by the tracking mark. The signal processing unit has a control circuit that carries out tracking control in accordance with an intensity of the second output signal and that carries out access control in accordance with an intensity of the first output signal.

Information reproducing apparatus and information reproducing method

There are provided a head gimbal assembly and an information recording and reproducing apparatus capable of easily positioning a light guiding portion and a slider on a tongue portion and performing a stable recording and reproducing operation. A head gimbal assembly recording information on a recording medium using a near-field light includes: a suspension that extends along a surface of the recording medium so as to be deflectable in a thickness direction; a support portion that is provided at a tip end side of the suspension so as to be more deflectable in the thickness direction than the suspension; a light guiding portion that has a support-facing portion provided to the support portion so as to face the support portion and introduces a light flux used for generating the near-field light; and a 3-dimensional structure that is provided to the support portion and used for positioning the support-facing portion on a desired portion of the support portion, wherein the support-facing portion has a portion in which a width of a sectional surface thereof perpendicular in a longitudinal direction of the suspension is larger than a width of a contact surface that makes contact with the support portion.

A stator includes a base board, a plurality of coil patterns patterned on one face of the base board, a stator core having a ring-like portion formed in a ring-like shape, a plurality of teeth base ends of which are fixed to the ring-like portion and front end portions formed respectively at front ends of the plurality of teeth in which the coil patterns and the teeth are laminated onto the base board to be respectively opposed to each other, and covers having base members bonded to the base board in a state of being respectively fitted to the plurality of teeth and covering surroundings of the respective teeth and conductive patterns patterned to inner faces of the base members and electrically connected to the coil patterns.

A near-field optical probe has a planar substrate formed with a through-hole and a phase shifter layer translucent to light having a wavelength of illumination light used to illuminate the substrate for producing near-field light. The phase shifter layer is effective to cause a shift of phase in the illumination light by 180 degrees and is provided on the substrate so as to cover one opening of the through-hole to form a microscopic aperture for producing near-field light.

Near-field optical probe for reproducing information on a recording medium using near-field light

A near-field optical head has a planar substrate having a first surface, a second surface disposed opposite to the first surface, and an inverted conical or pyramidal hole extending through the first and second surfaces. The conical or pyramidal hole has at least one fine aperture formed at an apex thereof and is disposed on the first surface of the planar substrate. An optical waveguide is disposed on the second surface of the planar substrate for propagating light. A light reflection film is disposed in the optical waveguide for reflecting in the direction of the fine aperture light propagated through the optical waveguide.

An information reproducing apparatus has a light source for generating linearly polarized light, a medium having linear marks disposed in overlapping relation to one another, and an optical head disposed between the light source and the medium and having a fine aperture. A polarized light control portion in the light source controls the linearly polarized light to pass through the fine aperture of the optical head to generate near-field light having a preselected polarization direction and to irradiate the linear marks of the medium with the near-field light so that the preselected polarization direction of the near-field light is orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of each of the linear marks. A detector detects light scattered by the linear mark irradiated with the near-field light.

Near-field information reproducing apparatus and near-field information reproducing method

An optical microcantilever for a scanning near field microscope comprises a support section, a cantilever-shaped optical waveguide, and a light blocking wall. The optical waveguide has a free end, a fixed end fixed to the support section and terminating in a light input/output end, and a tip formed at a side of the free end of the cantilever and having a microscopic aperture at an end thereof. The light blocking wall blocks the transmission of light scattered from a region of the light input/output end in the direction of the tip of the optical waveguide.
