A polymer blend including 5 to 95 weight percent of a poly(ester-carbonate-carbonate) comprising 40 to 95 mole percent of ester units comprising low heat bisphenol groups and high heat bisphenol groups, wherein the ester units comprise 20 to 80 mole percent of the low heat bisphenol groups and 20 to 80 mole percent of the high heat bisphenol groups, based on the total moles of ester units in the poly(ester-carbonate-carbonate), and 5 to 60 mole percent of carbonate units comprising the low heat bisphenol groups and the high heat bisphenol groups, wherein the carbonate units comprise 20 to 80 mole percent of the low heat bisphenol groups and 20 to 80 mole percent of the high heat bisphenol groups, based on the total moles of carbonate units in the poly(ester-carbonate-carbonate); and 5 to 95 weight percent of a poly(etherimide), wherein the weight percent of each polymer is based on the total weight of the polymers in the blend, and a molded 0.125-inch thick ASTM tensile bar comprising the polymer blend has a haze value of less than 25% as determined according to ASTM D1003 using the color space CIE1931 with Illuminant C and a 2° observer.

A method for manufacturing a poly(imide) prepolymer powder includes combining a bisanhydride powder or organic diamine and a solvent comprising an alcohol, a water-soluble ketone or water to form a mixture, adding an organic diamine or bisanhydride powder to the mixture to form a poly(imide) prepolymer, and removing the solvent to provide the poly(imide) prepolymer powder. A method for manufacturing a poly(imide) prepolymer varnish includes combining a bisanhydride powder or organic diamine and a solvent comprising an alcohol, a water-soluble ketone or water to form a mixture, and adding an organic diamine or bisanhydride powder to the mixture to form a poly(imide) prepolymer. The method of manufacturing the varnish further includes at least one of adding an effective amount of a secondary or tertiary amine to solubilize the poly(imide) prepolymer powder, heating the mixture to a temperature effective to provide the varnish, or agitating the mixture to provide the varnish. The poly(imide) prepolymer powder and varnish can have a residual organic diamine content of less than or equal to 1000 ppm. A poly(imide) polymer prepared from the prepolymer powder or varnish is also disclosed.

In one embodiment, the present invention provides a method of making a polymer-organoclay composite composition comprising (a) contacting under condensation polymerization conditions a first monomer, a second monomer, a solvent, and an organoclay composition, said organoclay composition comprising alternating inorganic silicate layers and organic layers, to provide a first polymerization reaction mixture, wherein one of said first monomer and second monomers is a diamine and the other is an dianhydride; (b) carrying out a stoichiometry verification step on the first polymerization reaction mixture; (c) optionally adding additional reactant (monomer 1, monomer 2, or chainstopper) to the first polymerization reaction mixture to provide a second polymerization reaction mixture; and (d) removing solvent from the first polymerization reaction mixture or the second polymerization reaction mixture to provide a first polymer-organoclay composite composition comprising a polymer component and an organoclay component wherein the organoclay component is at least 10% exfoliated.
