Range of the object of search is specified without specific designation by the user. In case changing of the image is instructed by an image operation portion, an image changing portion changes the image and displays such image on an image display portion, and the displayed image is held in a scope holding portion as the range of the object of search. A table in an HTML document is analyzed to generate cell position data indicating a positional relationship between cells and cell vectors representing characteristics of the cells, and a table type is judged with reference to the cell position data and the cell vectors, and, if the table type is a table describing a table, it is judged whether the data is represented in a column or a row with reference to the cell position data and the cell vectors, and a cut direction of the table is determined, and segments are generated with reference to the table type and the cut direction. If the table type is a table for layout, the cells are clustered with reference to the cell vectors, and the segments are generated with reference to the cell position data and cell cluster information.

Apparatus and method for dividing document including table

There is provided a text search apparatus capable of dividing a structured document such as an HTML document into segments, and presenting segments containing a given search key as the search result, thereby providing a part of the document matching the search condition as the result of search. The document is divided into segments by specified tags, and a level of association with an adjacent segment is calculated. A header is detected by a header tag, and the header information is added to the segment contained in the range of the header. Segments are divided and re-integrated according to the level of association therebetween, and indexes are prepared. A search is executed for two indexes, and the level of matching is calculated by weighting the search results for the indexes, and the search result judged according to such level of matching is stored or outputted for each segment.
